Why Is Youth So Left-Wing?

Yes but we would still see more people dying in the streets. Is that really what you want?

Several opinions here only enforce my belief that I should own as many guns as possible.

Knock yourself out.

Your opinion guarentees that I will never EVER vote for a party that represents western Canadian interests. Most of Ontario agrees as can be seen from the recent federal election.

They don't care quite frankly. They're far more concerned about the "government taking my money".

My only response to your very basic question (which is actually an insult to my intelligence) is as follows: who are you going to force to help that person? I certainly won't prevent anyone from helping him in a voluntary fashion.

Considering I'm not conservative, and I don't align myself with silly Western separation, I couldn't care less.

You are still caught up in the ever simple-minded left vs. right "my partisan crap is better than your partisan crap" mentality.

The only reason I continue to post here is for my own amusement.

Reading the posts of the conservatives here is shocking. I see the argument for and against welfare/social security merely about being fair. It doesn't cost you much to have a decent safety net, that ensures that all that have the potential to suceed aren't prevented from doing so because of circumstance. But for the benefactors they gain an awful lot. When you fall on hard times, it doesn't make you a bad person or a lazy person, merely an unfortunate one. Society as a whole benefits by helping out those that need it.
Sure you can stick your head in the sand and claim that just because you have worked hard you deserve your money why should 'government' steal it off you? But what about other people who work equally hard, but are trapped in dead end jobs because of circumstance? Perhaps if they had a bit of financial support to go back to school, they could get a better job....
Decrying unemployment benefit just because some people abuse it, is an entirely flawed argument imho like saying get rid of cars because of irresponsible drivers.

Incidentally, I'm 20 and a Guardian-reading bleeding-heart liberal university student. On the actual topic, I used to think yeah I'll become more conservative when I have a wife and kids to support, but now I'm not so sure. Perhaps if I had children I might think about giving more to help children from less privileged backgrounds as mine.

Incoherent rambling, but in summary Right Wing=Bad, Left Wing=Good (but often the putting the principles into practice falls short of the mark)

I'm simple minded but the "they're lazy and dumb because they're poor" mentality is NOT simple minded? Doesn't get any more black and white then that.

That is true in most cases.

Yes you're right... The poor are lazy and dumb. What reality do you live in?

Can you not understand how someone born into poverty due to unfortunate circumstances has far less of a shot then either you or I?

Then either you or I? I guess you assume I was born into wealth.

The poor are poor because they dont take advantage of the chances given to them. They are the ones who chose not to get an education.

I was not born into "wealth" either but I wasn't born into degrading hopeless poverty either and I would guess that neither were you.

However going to school and not having the latest pair of NIKE shoes like my classmates is FAR different then being born into a ghetto. I went to a decent school in a relatively nice neghborhood and my parents (relatively intelligent people) had the money to send me to college.

Compare that to a child born into a family in a ghetto in which is parents are illiterate and drug dealers control his street. School is a slum with underqualified teachers that generally don't care.

Thats a severe disadvantage that neither you or I would be able to claw our way out of.

I wasnt born in an urban area, but I was born into deep poverty. The US poverty level for a two-person household is $12,120. My family (which is two people in household) makes about $8,000.

So is your family lazy and stupid?

I was just wondering since you clearly link poverty with those traits...

Yes. My parents were lazy and didnt get an education. They all made stupid mistakes.

So you now use your experience with your family to base an opinion on all people living in poverty?

Nice.
