only 18 thats sad no dout saddly Us would be in there, and you would thing thore would we no new nation(no Australia,no Israel) Sad :(

I don't like it, but I see the reason for it. They need material for the expansions. And by not including many civs in the Vanilla version, they'll have plenty to throw into the expansions. Plus, I would rather they focused on gameplay than creating a ridiculous number of new leaders.

They are Firaxis, it's not that hard create new leaders to they.

It's for expansions as you said... But they could start with 25 to then in the end have something close to 60, what would be good.

When the game is fresh there is a lot of new stuff to enjoy. 18 civs is enough to learn how to play with and against for quite some time.

I will much rather get 18 truly unique and fun civs than 50 where the only real difference is name and color. Also Firaxis needs to balance them all. We don't want 50 civs where only 5 is worth playing :)

And yes, expansion packs is of course important too. If you really can't wait, Civ5 will be very moddable and I'm sure additional civs and leaders is some of the first things that will come :)

Well apparently each leader will have its own unique characteristics, rather than two traits coming from a combination of a number. So a new leader would require more work than previously...the creation of a whole new set of unique properties, rather than the adoption of existing ones.

by that logic, vanilla civ5 will be crap, so that the people, who bought vanilla, will have the insensitive to buy expansions packs :D

Well that's not exactly the same logic. I would assume though that they wouldn't be aiming to put everything conceivable into the vanilla version, to leave room for expansions. But they still need to make the vanilla version very good, in order for people to want to buy the expansions. If they don't like the game, they aren't going to dish out more money for an expansion. But if they don't like the expansion, they'll feel ripped off. So content needs to be spread, to a degree, across the vanilla version and expansions.

I would guess that there only adding in the really famous civilizations that everyone can recognize. It's better for the non-history buff to playing alongside Germany and China than New Zealand and Austria-Hungary (not that those countries are unimportant, but they just aren't that recognizable). They probably also figure that any more civilizations someone would want could be modded in, although I think ainwood is right, it seems like it would be very difficult to create the animations and art for new leaders.

Thank you!

I have always wondered why more unheard of civs weren't in CIV,but then it hit me no one would want to talk about their experiences playing civ if no one else had heard of the nation of Uzbekistan or the Kingdom of Siam,Serbia,Croatia,Ukraine plus even if they had heard about it,once you get into real region specific civs versus civs like Incans or Soiux it almost sounds to absurd to listen to.Example Romania had just defeated Korea would sound almost silly to Civ players and even odder to someone not familar with civ.Now in Civ4 or Civ3 you tell your friend "It was crazy I was leading a war effort into Russia when Russia counterattacked and stole Berlin or Paris" and then your friend might check out Civ...

I think what would be awesome is if they did regional expansion packs.Like European Expansion or Asian Expansion or something like that.Just give us ten or 15 new civs to work with.

18 is more than enough! Why have firaxis use time and ressources for something that could have been used for better things? Like AI, core game features - all the things we cant mod in by ourselves.

Quality over quantity is what makes the game worthwhile, not 300 distinct civilization.

Sigh...

It would be stupid to add new zealand, but Austria has been around for a while. Probably longer than a unified germany? (guessing) of course germany needs to be in there, because of the world wars.

Obviously New Zealand shouldn't even be considered, But why not polynesia? Polynesia covers a huge part of the globe, and represents a unique culture compared to the rest of the game. Maybe even Maori to represent polynesia? they are probably the biggest polynesian race

was civ4 vanilla very good? and did people still buy expansion packs? ;)

back on topic:
18 civs is fine.
i even can't imagine firaxis coming up with 18 unique civ(leader?) traits for each civ

Vanilla Civ4 was very good.

Yes and yes, for the reason of the first yes.

Poeple who live in the Us Are happy thay have Usa and are ok with 18 Civs, people like me (Australian) would like Australia to be add and then we would be fine with 18 Civs, that just my guess

Well, I'm Australian and I'm quite happy without Australia being added.
