Wierd menu

Ok, once I open Civ IV, everything works fine-ish...

When the intro movies are meant to play, I see a blue screen; but that is not my main concern... Once I click, this disappears, and I come up with the title screen, I see the world spinning, and 'Civilization IV' written on the top. However, the menu doesn't appear: Click here to see the image of the menu. When I randomly click on the screen, it seems as though I click on buttons, and eventually the 'Civilization IV' disappears, and I am stuck there, except if I press 'Esc' on my keyboard, and it goes back a step.

I don't think that it is a hardware problem, since everything seems to work smoothly, and a friend of mine with a worse computer than mine can play it, so I suppose that it is a software problem. Oh, and I also installed the DirectX9 that came with the game...

I payed forty-five euros for this, and I can't get my money back, since I opened the box already, so I would greatly appreciate it if someone could lend me a hand. I am a vet player of the first Civilization, and I would love to play this game.

Did you buy it after March 30? If so, try uninstall and reinstall. If not, download patch 1.61.

Also, in this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=133047) the problem is attributed to obsolete graphics drivers.

You did. I DLed the patch, installed it, and it works. Civ IV lags like hell, though.

Uh, oh. You better not have Anti-alaising (sp?) Multi-samples on, whatever that is. If you do, set it to zero (graphics menu).
