I've got this good OCC game set up as Bismarck. Snatched Stonehenge, The Pyramids, Oracle, got Christianity, The Hagia Sophia, The Great Library, The Partheon, Angkor Wat and the Taj Mahal. I started isolated with a VERY small island (9 tiles, every land tile was in my BFC) but an awesome one. (1 fish, two pigs, wheat on GRASSLAND and marble on a plains hill)

So in the very beginning (turn 25 or so) I noticed that the Holy Roman civ got wiped out. Must have been the Aryans. Ah well. Buddhism was founded oddly late, turn 20 or so.

Anyway, so around turn 70 or so I noticed that the Japanese civ got wiped out...hmm, too late for barbarians? Turn 130 or so I noticed the American civ got wiped out...um? Turn 170 or so I noticed the Persian civ got wiped out! Whoa! Either those are some super active barbarians or we got some ultra aggressive civs on the other continents. (on another note Taoism and Islam were both founded quite early)

So I had Optics around turn 175, so I loaded up three caravels, each with Christian missionaries and sent them off.

First I meet Pericles. He has quite an island. He's also being a horrific religion hog. I slowly realize he has SIX religions on his continent, Athens was the Buddhist Holy city, Aachen was the Hindu and Judaism holy city, Corinth was the Confucian Holy City, and one other city I don't remember was the Taoist and Muslim Holy City. But wow, religion hog!

Fortunately he is Pleased as I gift him a tech and he is running Free Religion.
I don't bother deploying the Missionaries as they will probably fail.

So then about 10 turns later I come across...Montezuma! And, I trade maps to find he has a MASSIVE continent completely under his control! According to the Domination screen he has 68% of the worlds land! Then I remember he has no religion in any of his cities! I quickly send the missionaries, and then once he got the 3 Christian cities he quickly spread it himself.

Anyway, I then got the Christian wedding event which was 3+ more diplo and then another one that I forgot that also gave 3+ more diplo...

And with that, Montezuma was Friendly! :D

So I'm doing pretty good, Monty has DoW'd on Pericles but Pericles is ahead in tech so he easily held him off and they got peace. Pericles is still Pleased with me even though I closed borders with him...

Start reading here if you're lazy and skipped the above part

But my question is, will Monty DoW on me when he's friendly? I should be able to win if he won't, but if he will DoW while Friendly, I'm finished :( he's got "enough on his hands" and the only units in Berlin are a Worker, a Explorer (the original Scout upgraded) and one longbowmen unit and two musketmen units.

Thanks in advance.

Unless you have Vassals even Monty can't DoW at the highest level of happyness.

Below that he'll come.

Hi

yeah it looks good like Monty is just gearing up for another crack and Peri.

The ONLY way most civs can DoW at firendly is like mentioned by everest if you have vassals and the AVERAGE of a civs feelings to you and vassal is below friendly.

Or if before you got to firendly they decided to DoW on you started building up and at some point during build up diplo got raised to friendly the AI would still follow through and DoW once build up was done since he made decision before you were at friendly.

And since you were friendly while Monty was already warring with Peri it good bet he just gonna attack him again.

Only other way is if a civ is bribed to go to war and ONLY civ who will take a bribe to DoW on someone they are friendly with is Cathy (which is why she is almost never worth the trbl of being nice to since she is a PAIN to please and even then you wont be 100% safe from a backstab from her) and even she cant just decide on her own to doW at friendly

Once a started a game with Montazuma and even though he adopted my religion for a +3 bonus, he ended up declaring war way earlier than I expected, while I was still setting up my initial cities. Fortunately he wasn't prepared for it either and all he did was send a small trickle of two or so archers into my lands... with slavery I was able to fend him off long enough to have peace, learn iron working and construction, and then build a large army of swordsmen and catapults to destroy him.

So basically, Montazuma is insane and watch him because just because he's friendly doesn't mean he won't declare war on you for the heck of it.

Yes, basically he is insane, but he can NOT DoW you on friendly (100% peace chance) - with the already mentioned exceptions.

He needs 4% to win the domination victory.

However, good old Pericles is far, far ahead of Montezuma so I think he should be able to fend him off. (and I'm far far ahead of Pericles :P)

"Monty's behind in tech so there's no way he can take AI X"

Famous last words :mischief:.

"Greece has capitulated and is now a vassal state of Montezuma!!!

He only needs what, 80 knights ?

An AI will declare war at friendly if he decided to DOW before he/she became friendly. If Monty has been friendly for a while then you should be safe. Sounds like ole Perky is gonna get a smack in the mouth. Every ten turns go ask monty for 10 gold. If he is friendly he will probably always say yes. that buys 10 turns of peace treaty.

My thinking is that he can as he's insane, but to be honest I have never gotten to a game where I could get MONTY friendly.

It's easy, just take all his cities and then he will be "friendly" and never attack you again.

I'd say do the 10 gold = 10 turn peace treaty stratagy while bolstering your defensive forces. you could use Universal Sufferage (i think you said you had the Pyramids in the OP) to buy a ton of muskets with city garrison. That should him off until you can negotiate peace.

Now four my own question.
On an 18 civ earth map, as France, Roosevelt was friendly, and monty was annoyed. Monty DoW Roos, with whom i had a def pact. Roos came to me asking to be my vassal. I loaded up some galleons w/ rifles, cannons, and calvary and catured Washington and NYC from Monty, and went to ask him for peace conditions, some $$, a world map, and Capitalation.

Now for the actual question...
He is annoyed at me. will he declare war on me??!!??!!
I gave him like 8 free techs trying to get him at least cautious, so he might pose a threat. Should I be worried??!!??

The bonus you get from giving free techs only goes to +4 max.

Yes. Only give Monty viable techs when he's capitulated to you.

I have seen "You shared technological (sp) breakthroughs with us" I always keep my vassals on the same tech level as me, so they can defend themselves when I DoW on my enemies Mwa ha ha ha ha ha:mwaha:

I wouldn't let them get tech parity as they will trade away your techs to possibly your rivals. You can watch them closely and make them stop trading but even then they may open there borders with them for 1 turn, trade your techs, and then cancel at you command. But you will still have lost your tech advantage.

Run his religion and declare on someone he's fighting. As long as you didn't refuse a ton of requests he'll like you for this. A lot.

This will work for a while. I was able to do it in my last win. Just watch your power graph because he attacked me three times later that game. He will just sit and build units and come after who ever is weak.

Yes, you do have to do other things to keep him at friendly, unless you're in a "war" for a good part of the game.

Isnt gracious the highest level of relations?
