Will leader portraits change through the tech ages?

If I remember correctly, in Civ3 the leader portrait would change to reflect the technological age of the civilization. I thought that was a cool feature. It also allowed with a quick glance at the diplomacy screen to see the overall technological level of all your opponents.

Any word on whether this feature is making a comeback in Civ5?

I keep reading stuff about seeing leaders in their own cultural context. I'm worried that you'll see modern(ish) leaders in modern(ish) settings even when civs are crawling out of the stone age.

With all the work they're putting into the animated leaders, chances are they'll look the same, regardless of tech level. That's a shame, though. My favorite feature in Civ3 was always caveman Lincoln.

While leaders changing their look according to the era would be cool, cosidering leaders are now fully animated it would require a big amount of work, it's better to put the resources on other aspects like gameplay or stability I would say.

That was indeed very cool! Sadly I doubt they will do it again, just too much work with todays level of graphical detail.

I guess it's so much work that it's the main limiting factor for the number of leaders. They would rather add 1 or 2 more leaders for some civ's or even additional civs instead of creating 4 versions of the same leader.

They could keep the same animations, just give them some new clothes and a new background.

3d models are ery though to do, too.

So if you could imagine Bismarck with a fur and leather retexture of his uniform, then maybe. But I guess it would look weird.

That´s why it is ******** to use these 3D animated leaders over and over, when the obvious solution is to use FMV-sequences with actors just as the High council in Civ 2 (who changed according to era)...
