Is it possible to get smac to run in a normal window? If so, how do I do that?

You can try using a program, such as DxWnd (Google it, if interested), that supposedly allows you to run almost any program in a window. You also can find similar programs by Googling run directx games in a window. However, as far as I can recall, no one has been able to get any of these programs to work with SMACX. YMMV.

Here's a technique that others have found to be satisfactory:

1. In your Alpha Centauri.ini file, delete the line (if present) directdraw=0.
2. Start one copy of SMAC.
3. Alt-tab to the desktop (colors and screen resolution may be messed up) and start a second copy of the game.
4. Exit one of the copies of SMAC.
5. The remaining copy should now appear at the top left of the screen (in a "window"). Colors and resolution should return to normal.

Thank you, works. Had to turn off project movies though, which is a bit of a pity, but they bounced me back to some twisted kinda fullscreen mode. Anyway, beats having to set up a vm just for one game.
