Windows 98 computer

I want to get a Windows 98 computer for my old games. Today I went down to computer store and they said it'd be rather difficult for them, 'cos all the old parts are hard to find.

I already have the 98 SE installation CD, so what should I do?

Here's my ideas:

1. Get an old computer from a thrift store and replace the broken parts. The problem is, you can't tell what parts are broken until you open it up, so it might be just useless.
2. Get a computer with XP, wipe XP, and install 98 SE. (I don't know if this will work.)
3. Buy all the parts, and build one myself. I might be able to get old parts at yard sales, or even my high school ('cos they had a pile of floppy drives that they threw out.) Although they say anyone who can turn a screwdriver can build one, I can't even do that 'cos of chronic pain.

I can't use eBay, BTW. Does anybody have suggestions/tips/warnings/etc?

Don't bother, Windows 9x is horrid.

Use DOSBox for older games.

If you want win 98 because you want to play dos games, try dos box: http://www.dosbox.com/

If you want to play old windows games, don't they work in compatibility mode? You can try to make a dualboot Ubuntu linux en install wine if the games don't work in vista or XP.

Before you do this, make sure you have the win98 drivers for the hardware. I don't think you will get win98 drivers actually, it's such an old OS.

If your intent on running Win98 download Virtual PC from Microsoft and install it in that.

I can also recommend virtual box. However, I don't think he will be abe to run games on it. I have bad experiende trying to run old games on virtual machines.

I tried Virtual PC and it crashed repetedly, because I have XP home and it wants another edition of XP.

I use DOSBox for DOS games, but I have a few 16-bit games that XP don't like. (I also tried bypassing the installer and copying direct from CD, 'cos sometimes the program itself is 32-bit, but no luck.)

If your computer has 98 drivers for all the components it'd be fine. Otherwise you could try linux and install wine.

Install 98 before XP if you're gonna do that.
