I upgraded to Windows Seven yesterday, and ever since then Rife is crashing all the time, and has become unplayable for me. Oddly enough, before I upgraded to W7, I never had any crashing problems, and was always able to finish my Rife (with latest patch .12) games.

I note that several people are having serious Rife crashing problems (eg. from the Bug thread someone just posted: 'I've pretty much resigned myself to fooling around with early game exploration fun as I never get past Turn 300 in epic speed games in RiFE without a showstopping CTD. Sometimes it helps if I go back 5-10 turns and replay differently, but that only buys me a few turns and is boring.Until the new version comes out, I'm playing other games, or having the 'fun with animals' experience with RiFE only.', and so on.

So the question is: are the people with serious crashes also on W7 like myself?

try moving CIV to the root directory, I've had less problems with it that way.

have been running win7 ultimate since october

I'll probably start running Windows 7 tomorrow, but I left my Civ IV disk at school so I won't be playing FfH on a Windows 7 computer until Sunday at least.

My current laptop has been slowly failing since its warranty wore off last summer. There about now about 85 1-pixel wide lines of discoloration on the screen, the CD drive sounded like a lawnmower the last time I used it, it has frequently been overheating, and the keyboard and touch-pad aren't as reliable as they once were.

I'll probably be getting this new computer as an early Christmas present tomorrow: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pa...01326&st=dv6-2088dx&cp=1&lp=1#tabbed-overview The screen isn't as large as I'd like, but an 8GB RAM laptop for $665 seems like a pretty good deal. (It is on clearance at the store closes to us, so it is cheaper than it says online.)

Edit: I'm on that new laptop now. Its price dropped further to $594.95 overnight. The HP website says a computer with these specs should cost a little over $1,300.

Yes, I wrote that comment in the bugs thread about the constant CTDs in my game. To illustrate, I started a game as Varn Gosam and got my first one on Turn 40. The only thing that happened that I thought my be a problem is my Lightbringer using Scorch (3 turns) on a tile - I got that sound before the CTD. I went back 3 turns and didn't use Scorch and...no CTD. :crazyeye: However, I used the Lightbringer and Bedouins to Scorch other tiles.

Back on topic, yes, I am using Windows 7 Home Premium with a default installation of Civ 4, BtS, RiFE, etc.

I think I was getting these CTDs when I was using Vista Home Premium as well. Also, the telling thing for me is that I can play all the way through with no problems a game (epic speed) of FFH2, Orbis, or FF - all latest versions. However, by far, I enjoy playing RiFE more with all the extra added goodies by Valkrion, Vermicious, etc. I'm not sure moving everything to the root directory would solve anything as the other mods seem to work fine with things as they are now.

As I mentioned, I am playing other games waiting for the new version with the hope the CTDs cease or at least become rare. I still enjoy the first 300 or so turns of RiFE with the exploration, battles with animals, etc., but it is so damn frustrating when you have a fun game going and the crashes start coming.

I'm running W7 and I've not been able to get over turn 200 in any of my games. Its really depressing :(

I am running Win 7 ultimate 64 clean install.. No issues what so ever with any of the CIV IV stuff or mods. I shouldn't have said that out loud so to speak/type. I immediataly killed the UAC or whatever it is called, I've read about that and upgrade installs causing trouble.

Also make sure you run the icon as admin. I don't know if that helps I just do that all the time now.

Notebooks are a whole different animal. I have had no Win 7 issues to speak of.

I've never been able to run Civ 4 etc. on a notebook. I have a top of the line HP with 512 graphics, 4gb RAM, Vista 64, etc. and I cannot get it to run at all. I can't figure out why not and just use my desktop which runs Win. 7 32 bit.

Update:

Well things got much much worse for a while: the game ran increasingly slow, and I was having problems with shuddering graphics and strange crackling sounds from the speakers. After lots of trial and error, I disabled the Audio card, and re-neabled it, restarted the computer, and somehow everything fixed itself and the game runs superbly again.

I moved from XP to Windows 7 the Wednesday before last (when I got a new laptop for Christmas and was allowed to start using it early, as they did not have many laptops with 8BG RAM for just under $600 left and we wanted time to exchange it in case it was defective), but had left my Civ IV and BtS disks at school so I did not notice the problem until after I went back for them last Sunday. After trying unsuccessfully for 3 days I overcame the block, but I forget how exactly.

Several times I tried to remove the read only marker, but that did not work. I found something online that was supposed to let me change the lettings using Run... and typing in code as if in DOS, but that did not help. I think eventually I right clicked on the Firaxis folder, clicked properties, went to the Security tab, clicked advanced, and then gave myself special permission to write to things in the folder even though it was still marked as read only. It did not work on my first 3 or 4 attempts though.

It still won't let me save excel files with macros to the folder (and when it makes me save it elsewhere the macros seem to disappear), so Kael's FfH editor is causing me some issues. I normally edit the files directly (or with winmerge) instead of using it anyway, but my attempts to merge my old code in have so far led to unexplained crashes and it is faster to rely on the editor in the first round of modding from scratch.

It's not too big of a deal here (Also on a new laptop which was a Christmas gift ) as I still have my desktop; Using it to do the editing atm.

It's really going to aggravate me later on though unless I move it, as I'll be starting C++ classes shortly... Would be annoying to have to keep using the old comp with inferior software.

At least in Vista you need Admin privileges to edit files in Program Files. Probably the same with Seven.

Honestly, I'm not even sure if that is enough. Vista/7 makes editing Program Files folder really difficult. I recommend saving/installing files that you need to edit somewhere else.
