Wordle in four again today. Maybe I'm not losing my marbles after all...

... but then I failed Quordle (8/5/7/fail). Two of my guesses were plausible-but-wrong anagrams of the 5 letters I'd identified for the first and second solutions, which left me no free slots to narrow down the fourth

After doing wordle I tend to do NYT's Spelling Bee. TIFFIN, apparently, isn't a word? I appreciate the longer words aren't from the official wordle list, but how can AXION (with an N) be deemed to be in common usage while TIFFIN isnt?

Spelling Bee is all over the place on what it does and doesn't consider a word. I don't think it actually does think AXION is a word, but you're saying Wordle does think so?

Yup. Axion (the hypothesised subatomic particle) was in, IIRC quordle. One of the knock-offs that use the wordle dictionary, but clearly the acceptable words list not the target words list.

I got it in 3, opening with a different D&D class adjective

I too got today's in 4. Worth mentioning because it was a decent word.
TJS I challenge you to start using super random words to open. Make each wordle a journey. Today I opened with BREAD. Not a super handicap word, just suboptimal and unworthy of repeat.

Why do you say it's suboptimal? 5 different letters, all rather common.

Yes, it's certainly fine. But it doesn't cover bases well. E and A are often together, so we could diversify our vowels better. B and D are decent but (only) the R is damn near essential.

STUNG - 2 yellow (S,T)
CREST - ST still yellow joined by a yellow E
TILES - 3 yellow again! but still way too many possibilities
HASTE - pinned down the ST at least,
PESTO - okay , this is going badly but at least now there's so few workable letters left....

Still took me four guesses (Hard mode) to get to the solution, though (would have been three, but I went for the "4th-letter-twice" option before the "4th-and-5th-letters-different" option)

Used a new third starter in Quordle as well, but that didn't go so well.

Although I solved one word immediately, my fifth guess was wrong, so I changed target. Inspiration struck for the sixth guess, but that solution only helped a little with the remaining two words, so I was getting a mite worried — especially when I needed two more shots to hit the third solution. But my seventh guess also confirmed the fifth letter for the last word (though I could probably have deduced it, since there weren't many options left by that point!) (8/9/4/6)

Guessed LOUSY instead of LOUSE, despite already having the E in yellow. Then I was one guess short at the end .
Having guessed BEVER first didn't help either.

I got it in five, with another Hygro-style random starter -- which totally failed to ID even a single letter

Quordle went 8/6/7/5, because even though my starters had placed 2 letters correctly and given me a third letter for one of my targets, I still could not figure it out. But my (deliberately) wrong 4th guess, to try a new letter, happened to be its anagram...
