Do workboats function the same on water as workers do on land? What is the meaning of the little boat icon on my costal tiles? Can workboats be automated?

This is my first familiarizaton game in Civ4 & I used the workboats to work the fish & clams resources. I automated another & it took off & then I lost track of it. Later in the game I noticed these little boat icons on coastal tiles in my territorial waters & in other Civs as well.

I would appreciate any information that would help me. Thanks,

Dale H

Workboats are the same as workers except they can only create one improvement (they then disappear). And they can indeed be automated, although it is kind of pointless to automate for one improvement if you ask me.

The little boat means that the tile is being worked in the same way that on land, the spaces that are being worked by your population also have little huts on them. In this way, you can tell which tiles are being worked without ever clicking on the city screen.

Workboats are also built as standard units, rather than worker/settlers. So only shields go into creating them and food is put to city growth. So starting a workboat as a city's firiist build won't pause the growth.
