Australia did the job. It's Australia 1, Uruguay 0. Th game just finished about 2 hours ago, the goal coming from a penalty around the 87th minute.

Fingers crossed for the return leg at Montevideo on Monday next.

Uruguay stacked their defence for most of the game, so a 1 - 0 result for Australia wasn't a bad effort. However, the job is only half done - Uruguay in Montivedeo will be tough.

If the Aussies win through to the World Cup there will be lots of - there will be lots of anyway!

However: Korea Rep, Sweden, Ecuador and USA - or perhaps Australia (no offense meant, just trying to weigh the strengths, I'm no great shakes at valuing teams) would still be a good group.
And Argentina, Sweden, Poland and Nigeria would be a bad one. Even Turkey would be hard. Or Slovenia. Don't underrelate this team (mind you, these are seen from Norway, who has been whipped off by Poland and Slovenia in the past year or two)

Anyway, have they seriously placed Nigeria in group 4??? Are FIFA mad??? And Australia in group 3 (if the qualify)??? Can't be right. China in group 3???? Impossible, ridiculous and other adjectives that I unfortunately can not remember at the moment.

What about the hostile reception of the Aussie team in Montevideo? How come they allow this sort of overt intimidation to happen? I know they take their soccer very seriously but common sense and common civility must surely prevail. Will there be rioting if the home team were to lose the series?

Well, it's Uruguay 3 and Australia 0 at Montevideo. The home team boosted by their striker Dario Silva had all the answers and were the better team on the day. What a difference the home turf makes - disappointing from an Aussie viewpoint when so much was expected from this "strongest" team fielded for the World Cup

Seriously, Soccer, as a popular sport in Australia, will continue to struggle until the Socceroos make the World Cup. And they will have trouble making the World Cup without a larger percentage of talented sportsmen choosing Soccer rather than Aussie Rules and Rugby - catch 22!

Sorry I would have liked Australia to have qualified but I find it funny that they haven't because people always expect them to. Mainly because they get really high scores in their opening group.

The draw for the world cup is coming up soon (Saturday). I think I will watch it whilst online and I will post the groups unless someone beats me too it.

Then the draw comes, and aside from the fact that it put us in a ridiculous group, it also created a "death group". My point being that this is a bit (maybe a lot) unfair, but I'm not complaining at all. I'm just pointing it out .

the groups fifa world ranking position. nigerias high 40th place is spoiling group f´s numbers but we all now that they are better then that.
