World History Mod development thread

Random Fun Fact: Did you know Ethiopia was the first State to adopt Christianity as a State Religion in the World, and that same form of Christianity is still practised to this day. The Faithful ones.

Hope things are coming along okay! :)

Hey! Don't contradict me, I'm pretty :lol::crazyeye::goodjob:
Hmm... I think they both converted in the 4th century, which was first I think I would have to dig up some old books to find out, and no I'm not doing that :D
Though Christianity had entered Ethiopia (long?)before that, it high officials having converted and a Church established before the King converted the whole of the Nation to Christianity. The Ethiopian court (governing officials) were first introduced to Christianity around approximately the year 42. You may remember the story of the Ethiopian Eunuch as written in Acts, Chapter 8, verse 27: "Then the angel of the Lord said to Philip, Start out and go south to the road that leads down from Jerusalem to Gaza. So he set out and was on his way when he caught sight of an Ethiopian. This man was a eunuch, a high official of the Kandake (Candace) Queen of Ethiopia in charge of all her treasure." The Nation to this day has deep-rooted Ethiopian Orthodox customs and practices. The Judaic-Christian roots of Ethiopia can be found in both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
And you have to give them credit, since the rise of Islam they've been surrounded by a different and somewhat forceful religion and yet have retained their faith as it was over 2000 years ago. They gave shelter to Muhammad's first followers and thus earned the respect of the Islamic Empire and was speared much bloodshed for years.
Through blood and tears, and even the threat of annihilation from their christian brothers in Italy they've stayed true to their faith. Even the Ark of the Covenant rest with in their churches. They are the Faithful ones.

Glad to hear things are coming along good with the mod, can't wait to play it :)
Looks like I have a year(Long time) to work on the African list, so no hurry :D

@moopoo: thanks!
@beardedwonder: ha
@grishnash: yes, I've heard that before, it's neat to know that they sheltered all those muslims and possibly bought their own survival; it will be a bit less than a year 'till it comes out, if I remember correctly. I would need to have any and all information well before, if I am to be on time, gosh I'm not even on time when I do have all the info I need

things are going okay, I mean yeah my speed has kinda dropped (the first half of the summer will be slower than the second half, busier than I thought, and I've decided to just make things easy and have it finished sometime this summer)

but i finished most of the tech buttons (there aren't a lot), replaced a couple custom bonuses that mysteriously are nowhere to be found on any computer, and will work on code some more soon. And maybe a couple unit previews because not a lot of work I have to do there

I don't think Ethiopia's religious history is very well documented here (UK), regardless of whether you're a Christian or not it's a fascinating subject. Was reading about the medieval churches carved out of solid rock... cool :):):):) indeed! Didn't Portugese explorers think they had found the kingdom of Prester John?

Anyway, we'll say it was a draw for which was the first Christian state ;)

The whole thing about sheltering muslims and earning respect could make for a cool unique power: +5 relations with all muslim leaders, or something to that effect.

I'm sorry I've been so busy, and I'll just be more busy for the next couple of days

On the weekend I will try starting fresh with the mod, so I can figure out what is causing the worldbuilder problems as well as some crashing. While I do this I will add more of the native units into the mod.

@moopoo- totally up to Grishnash
@grishnash- I noticed you linked to a book at the bottom of your 100 African facts post. Would you reccomend the book? I could always order and read it when it comes time to work on that continent (after this summer)

Kevin

I would recommend it for a general review of African History. It is a good book to read, but I will note that the book focuses on achievements of architectual merits and conquests. Not on achievements of democracy, religion, social security, matriarchal and sexual freedom, understanding and preserving of nature and similar merits, which had/have been surpassing Western counterparts to this day, getting largely destroyed by colonialism in the nineteenth century onwards. I would recommend for in depth research into African History to keep your sources varied.
But overall, yeah, I would recommend the book for those seeking a looking glass into the past. And the future :)
The main reason I link it actually is because I directly took that 100s list from it's website :)

Hey, I made a civilization, the Zimbabwe Civilization (See sig :) ) . It's only XML really, but I was thinking of making all the African civilizations of the civ list (or at least some of them). I was wondering if I could have those flags you had for the African Civilizations on the old forum before it vanished.

Good luck!!!

Done a lot of troubleshooting work. Still encountering problems but not too severe

@Grishnash, yes I can, but they were designed to fit onto horizontal flags. I have the flag graphic files, not the image (afaik). Let me know if you would still like them (I can provide the flag base if you need it). Your new civ looks good!

EDIT: fixed the worldbuilder problems! Troubleshooting is time worth spending! Unit art should go smoothly now

Thanks!
Yeah, that would be great if I could use them, really I just wanted to see what they looked like :)

Hope things are coming along okay :goodjob:

Hey, I found the image on imageshack (which I haven't used lately), here it is, realize that the image is old and doesn't reflect some changes:

flagsafrica.png

Also, I will redo Ghana at some point, and I'd like to do the G. Zimbabwe flag along the lines of what you have done (a simple flag with that eagle emblem on it)

Things are going (slowly)... to save time I will not preview Sioux/Iroquois, but they are basically done, instead I will just preview UUs, which I will aim to do by the end of this weekend. I will also do some more troubleshooting

Kevin

Sorry progress is so slow! (well not really but slower than I'd like). Deadlines are still the same, with some leeway

Native civs are now in-game so I can finish/preview UUs

Here is what I will do for Meso/Andes techs, at this point in time:

HIGHLAND CIVS START WITH
Raised Field Agriculture

FOREST CIVS/NATIVES START WITH
Archery

LEARNABLE TECHS
Bronze Working
Sun Worship?
Astrology?
Early Astronomy
Early Paving
Fortification
Writing
Urbanization > Imperial Warfare > Logistics; Accounting

this will force historicity, for example, the Incas did not use bow and arrows 'til they adopted them from forest tribes to the east

So there will be the regional techs, then transitional techs, then the standard modern techs that every civ has access to. The transitional techs are things they learn/acquire from invaders such as horseback riding, gun stuff, governing, etc. This will come once Europe has been put into the mod, as obviously without an invasion these techs do not exist

Kevin

ON VACATION UNTIL JULY 2nd

Random Fun Fact: The Moors were/are North African Muslims that had at one point ruled most of North Africa and Iberia. Moorish technology and knowledge enabled the founding of the Americas. They also provided a rallying point for the spanish Kingdoms to unite against. :goodjob:

Hope Things are coming along!

Hey, sorry for the absence; I am going to finish the Native artwork now, and see if I can get the civics person back

I am thinking of delaying until after Civ5 is released, since it is so close, and since that could probably provide a bit of artwork. Plus, if I'm lucky, I could get it a week or two in advance

I will update soon

Kevin

Random fun Fact: The Glorious Ancient Egyptians claimed that their ancestors and founders came from the land of Punt, known to them as the Land of God. Punt is the name of Ancient Ethiopia.

Random Fun Quote: “The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.” - Oscar Wilde

Hey, I've made another civilization, the Kongolese! Check it out!

Hope things are coming along, can't wait to play ;D

Looks nice!

I might not be able to use the unit (at least not without modification), if I end up having to use that Berber art pack. But I haven't looked into it yet

For the flag, just reference Playercolor_White, which is (primary) white, (secondary) red. And make sure Whiteflag=0.

Failing that, if you can't find a solution, I have a non-decal dds of all African flags.

Will get some more unit art done tonight!

Kevin

Two more civs in-game: Tiwanaku and Nazca.

And just so there is a point to this post here is an image of their new flags:

andesflags.bmp

Mind the ever-present glitches, I will fix them at some point

EDIT:

(after some difficulty) the native civs are now in-game too... here are the flags (nothing new), as well as two of the new UUs:

(Iroquois Rifle Scout, Creek Arquebusier)

Nice units! :)

I figured out what the problem was, it was how I made the flag :p Thanks for the advice, now the flag is white and red like it's suppose to be ;)
I've updated the civ and gave it another leader but now the file is 13MB, now of a good site to host it on for download?
