Worst/Best Neighbors

Oddly enough I like being around Monty and the Khan (sounds like an 80's rock band). They both respect power, and being a gun toting nut myself I rarely have a problem. Unless I choose to have one.

Heh, I have to agree on that. I never have any real problem with those two, and quite enjoy having them nearby. As you say, as long as you keep your military in decent shape, they will either leave you alone, or launch a predictable little war or two in which you can kick their pants and set them back a few hundred years while you go about your business.

They don't hold grudges (unless you deliberately do stuff to them that produces hard feelings), and you can usually do 'Friendly' trading again with them for full price, within a turn or two of them suing for peace. And they don't get all self-righteous on you just because you go kick the tar out of some other deserving civ and take their lunch money... like Washington or Ghandi are so fond of doing.

Ghandi: "My loving, peaceful nature simply cannot abide your awful warmongering!" /launches nukes on your cities

Also, you can always depend on Khan and Monty to eventually stagnate and neglect minor things like science, culture, improving their lands, or do anything but constantly pump out tons of low-level obsolete units until some other civ(s) eventually squash them like little children. Oh, toss Askia into that playpen too, while we're at it. Congenital losers, all three. But good to have for neighbors, for all their foibles.

Civ I most hate to have anywhere on the map, neighbor or no- Catherine. Every time I've played against her in recent memory, she's rapidly gobbled up everyone nearby, gone mega-science and been difficult to catch in the tech race- and been vicously aggressive most of the time. Always a good challenge, but frequently a runaway civ, unfortunately.

alex is the worst in my experiences. and washington is as bad diplomaticly. seems washington will declare friendship, then have a pile of troops waiting on your border when it expires.

Nobody has yet mentioned Augustus.

In my last game before the patch he backstabbed me ("backstab" was in the declaration) at least 3 times. Each time immediately returning to "Friendly". After the first, he continued to apologize when he declared and mentioned he would probably lose.

In my current game, he has done the same twice. Right now he has approached my border city with a number of cannon and some melee units (rifles). I'm low on gold, but I can upgrade to rocket artillery and mech infantry. I am hoping to do some upgrading. Maybe a few units, but Pentagon is due completion in 3 turns. I have to decide whether I can wait those turns, upgrade a few now, or spend a great engineer.

Askia has been Hostile for some time, but I am #1 in military (I'd better check that) and have infantry and artillery defending the city so he has held off any hostile actions so far.

Both Augustus and Askia have agressively built cities on my borders so I have two fronts needing defense.

Hmm, my worst neighbors to date have been the Ottomans, Aztecs and the Mongols. My wife says her worst was Germany, who denounced her at turn 5 upon meeting her for the first time.

The only one that in EVERY game as a neighbour always attacks me and is always strong is Alexander of Greece. Others vary a lot.

The best neighbour to have IMO is Babylon. They never expand too much so leave you lot's of room. They are always interested in RA's and regular trade. And halfway the game they get agressive and DoW you, and you can take their 3 or 4 very interesting cities.

The most annoying is Polynesia. Al thos small boats everywhere, losing a lot of the strategy of getting caravels ASAP and all.

Alex is the worst by far, followed by the Norse, Monty, Mongolia and Washington. Alex will always declare war, the Norse will always back stab you, Monty & Mongolia will attack but will respect strength, and Washington just unpredictable but doesn't expand very often. Cathy falls into that unpredictable group but for some reason I rarely end up close to her.

Least fav neighbors are Greece and Rome. Dudes just no how to tear it up. They spread like a plague, and when its your turn, you better be ready, or you'll be dead.

I keep get getting starts like 5 tiles away from Bismark. He'll denounce me early and DOW me for having the gall to build a second city and expanding too fast (when he has 3 already).

I had a MP player game with a friend and, again, I was spawned way too close to AI Bismark. I was Oda though so I thought it would be okay. But I had no iron. Why would you give Oda a start with no iron and give Bismark 10 iron?!

Game, please stop starting me near him

I hate Washington and Alex. First Washington gives his High and Mighty Speech, Your warten (WTH?) aggression leaves us no choice, prepare for war, and Alex is just plain annoying. Whats funny is that Washington is the clear warmonger. Khan doesn't really annoy me because I usually stay my distance and leave him to annihilate someone else. :)

i find that every AI neighbour backstabs you regardless of their flavors. The friendliest ive encountered is china and arabia. the worst ive met are alexander and monty.

Couldn't agree more neighbours aren't your friend... I recently had a game where china allways friendly declares war on me with some warriors while i had knight and musketman...

Well I didnt found it suprising she was my neigbhour just suprising she did atack so late

I had a game where the Danes were continuously my friends. Granted, they weren't original neighbors. The Aztecs were their neighbors and had conquered one of their cities. I conquered the Aztecs, but left their lost city untouched (which they eventually retook). They were friendly with me throughout after that and never called me a warmonger. This was true even after I completely wiped out the Aztecs (thus removing the shared enemies bonus).

Japan on the other hand hated me when I became their neighbors through conquest. I'm not sure if that was an AI personality difference or if it was circumstances (I never was as close to them, plus I conquered cities they had previously attempted to take from the Aztecs so they unquestionably actually wanted territory of mine).

England and Greece are the two worst neighbors to have.

Elizabeth is annoying because she's so darn unpredictable and will suddenly declare war for no real reason and then a few 20 or so turns later she'll want to be friends again. So crazy.

Greece is annoying because he always seem to get EVERYONE allied with him and then puts together some gang bang setup against me, I wish I knew how he expertly accomplishes this nearly every game i'm next to him.

Hehe, my best has to be India, worst is Pachacuti by far. Heck, I'll take Germany as neighbour before the Incas, maybe even Alex hehe. I find that Bismark is just plain rude and annoying, and I'm German! :D Alexander is, well, Alexander, a big kid who got everything and then went out and beat everyone senseless with the fact. I should point out that the Aztecs tend to declare on me, then quit their war and become afraid of me alot lately. That makes them a great neighbour. :)

Yes, Cathy, as pretty as she is, is nasty sometimes hehe. I've had alot of games where she went on a rampage!
