last regular PTW game I played, I found one of my armies duking it up with an Aztec army composed of two riflemen... and a catapult. :king: I bow before thy wisdom, O Great A.I.

I didn't even know you could put a catapult in an army?

This.

I'm really confused. I thought you needed attack and defense to load into an army.

You can't load catapults into armies (or any bombardment only units including cannons or arty). Maybe the army was in the same square as a catapult, but it wasn't part of the army.

Just to be sure, I rushed an army in an old game (PTW) and tried loading arty into it. Didn't work.

Besides the catapult question - AI use of armies is incredibly bad. I've attacked cities and found armies with a single horseman in them. Trying to find a worst use of AI armies is really mapping out the depths of the Artificial Idiots. I can think of no area of the game the AI is as bad at.

That is an inherent problem with the Conquests AI.

They will only add units to an army if the unit is as fast as the army. Since the army gains 1 speed, it means adding the fastest unit first means the army will forever stay unfilled.

If the AI happens to add a slow unit first, then they will fill the rest with fast units, and things will work out "better".

A lot of mods fix this by making armies have 1 load capacity, and simply give them a HP bonus.

Because the AI couldn't handle armies, I simply modded them out of the game for the standard bic game. If you preset them in a scenario, the AI will then use armies OK.
