there's a thread somewhere else on this forum, where they show the americans, who started in the middle of the desert, with no irrigation source, and they BUILT their freaking city there.... so they never got bigger than size 2, and could never build any settlers
I'd like to hear from a few of you........do you like to emphasize food or shield production from your capital? Personally, I like my first city to be a food producer, you need to grow fast in population so that you can churn out those settlers early on for the obligatory land-grab. Normally, my second city is founded by some forest or hills, if I'm lucky enough by some plains cattle, to be a shield-producing monster. (You need at least one or two high-production cities to start construction on early wonders).
Usually the computer gives you a good starting location, I'm normally able to found my city at 4000BC as I start by a source of fresh water and have some good bonus resources. And by the way, the A.I. -ALWAYS- founds it's capital in 4000BC.
