At least I was able to take out my computer woes with this game. Thabks BBP. :goodjob:

Settled 1 SE with my second city built to pick up the gold/ivory. I settled another 4 on the land mass with another island city to the South for the 2 sea food. Then off to war.

Liz first. I took all the western cities on her island including London before peace. This gave me a good launching point for the Ottomans capital and my first vassal. Then thought ooh there is a nice jumping off point to Cyrus's capital from the end of the Ottomans lands and vassal No 2. Ended up wiping the remainder of Liz out and vassaling the Americans/Mali and Americans for a conquest victory circa 1695.

I took no prisoners. I razed, pillaged and burned like a true viking!
...
Actually, that's a big sack of lies. I won culture victory without fighting a single war and never leaving my home island.

Kultur? Vad helveten?

When I found out that most of the other civs were nice, I figured I'd play nice as well. Besides, I liked the idea of pursuing a pacifist victory with a bloodthirsty leader. That was wasting the aggressive trait, yes, but financial was a big thing.

I did build the GLH even though I never had more than six cities (all coastal, of course). I didn't bother with the Colossus, but it might have been worth it as well. Diplo was easy; everyone except Mehmed was pleased with me despite the fact that I ran a heathen religion (confu which I founded) from discovering philosophy 'till the end of the game. Mehmet wasn't really a threat, either. Before I shut down the slider, he was ass-backwards in tech and afterwards I signed DPs with Frederick, Roosevelt and Cyrus. Good luck invading my island, turban-head.

Didn't build any other World Wonders. I decided that even Sistine wasn't worth the effort because it's considerably weaker than in BtS and the required tech was relatively low interest for me (Do you guys ever build it when going for culture in Warlords/Vanilla?). Another reason not to build it was that my GP farm was not one of my legendaries. In fact, it was a pretty crappy city, but I managed to get it up to 57 GPP/turn. I ran the culture slider at 100% almost all the time and funded it mostly by trading my luxury resources for gold (with a couple of cities building wealth, if necessary).

Finished turn 309 (1878AD) with a score of 8400, so probably not very competitive, but it sure was a fun little experiment. One thing I'm satisfied with, is the timing; the other two cities hit legendary just one turn after the first one. Of course, there were a couple of stupid mistakes I made:

1. Started building universities for Oxford when education rolled around. I almost facepalmed when I realized that I'll be shutting my slider down after a couple more techs. Luckily, it was just a few turns of production wasted.

2. Starved my GP farm trying (and failing) to get one last GA at the very end. Probably hurt my score somewhat.

Another fun fact: The UN and Apollo programs of two rivals were finished on my victory turn. Nice try, guys, but too little, too late.

I started the game with the idea of pursuing a military victory. That idea would change.

After missing the GLH, I did get the Colossus, in 225 AD. I researched C.S. by 680 and began building berserkers, but I didn't begin the war against Elizabeth until 1120. I bribed Mansu Musa to join me, although I didn't see any evidence of him accomplishing anything before they made peace in 1320. Despite that, my conquest was slow but steady, eliminating Elizabeth in 1610.

Mehmed was my next target, with a DOW in 1695. I must have interrupted his plans; he declared war on Cyrus on the following turn! And despite my rapid conquest of his eastern cities, he succeeded in capturing and holding Persepolis...until I captured that, too. Mehmed had one island city between M.M. and Frederick's territory that I had overlooked. I bribed Frederick to join the war, in the hope that he'd finish off that city quicker than I could get there, but I had to complete the Otttoman conquest, myself, in 1818.

I had been thinking of making Cyrus my next target, but our "mutual struggle" had made him friendly to me and M.M. and Roosevelt were gaining a tech lead, on the way to a space race, so I decided to go the diplomatic route, instead. I completed the U.N in 1884, was elected Secretary General, and then achieved a diplomatic victory in 1896 with everyone else's support vs. Roosevelt.

6-movement Galleons and Berserkers rock!

Started the war in 660AD where I took Istanbul with Mids, Colossus, ToA, Stonehenge and GW. :D

Moved west from there and ended up with Lizzi and Mansu where trebs did a part of the job.... :hammer:

Rushed to finish this game. War mongering can be tedious and the holidays are over . My stats at 1AD were similar to z3. 7 cities, 35 pop 69 bpt and 52 hpt. I had circumnavigated and met all the AI. Built the GLH and missed the Oracle (Built in Berlin 1000 BC). Considering the level the AIs were researching and developing fast. Researched Construction early and had 3 WEs, 4 galleys and 1 cat by 1 AD.

DOW Roosevelt first 475 AD. Capture 4 cities and burn down 3. Next is Cyrus (780 AD) using fresh units from home and Fred (830 AD) using the veterans from America plus units built in American cities. In the meantime CS and Machinery is researched. Liz gets Feudalism quite early (somewhere between 540 AD and 580 AD) so I avoid researching it because I fear it will be traded around when it’s no longer a monopoly tech. Instead I research Drama so that the slider can be used for happy faces and cultural expansion of captured cities. This might be a mistake because the next one to get Feudalism is Mehmed (probably traded with Liz, they are both Hindu) and none of them will trade it to me. This means that I have to completely eliminate Cyrus (capture 2 and burn 4 cities) and my attack on Fred is going very slowly with only one stack deployed that has to heal and replenish between attacks. At the same time I’m in a rush to get some fresh stacks of cats and berserkers to Mali (DOW 980 AD). I manage to burn down two cities before Mansa gets Feudalism. Now I can trade for it with Mehmed and Fred immediately capitulates. This means that my veterans from the German war can move on and join the attack on Mansa. Veterans from Persia and fresh units from eastern American cities move towards the Osman empire and war is declared 1060 AD. Mansa capitulates after the capture of his capital and the burning of his 3 largest cities. Mehmed capitulates a little later after the burning of his 4 largest cities including Istanbul and the city where Mids were built. Now all forces converge on Liz and she capitulates after her 4 largest cities have been burnt. Conquest victory for Vikings in 1210AD. Lost a few turns in the end trying to dodge some English caravels and probably also lost some turns due to poor micro management of troop movements in the end. Still, it’s interesting that I only finished slightly faster than z3 who apparently waited for Astronomy before starting the attack. Looks like you can regain a big part of the turns invested in researching techs like Feudalism (Enable capitulation), Engineering (Trebs) and Astronomy (Galleons).

Unfortunately I ran out of time to finish this one (also missed deadline to submit an incomplete game). Anyways, I enjoyed playing it while I could, thanks BBP! :goodjob:

The funniest part of my game was the battle for Ankara. Experienced players already know that Mehmed is a troop-spammer (iBuildUnitProb=40, highest among all leaders), and in my game he proved it. There were 30 Ottoman units garrisoned there when my galley carrying a couple berserkers showed up there circa 1000AD.

Nevertheless, the Ottoman hordes were not a match for the mighty Viking duo.
