If you had the opportunity to change the course of history, in anyway you wanted too, would you do it? Would you be willing to create a new timeline? Would you risk everything in the hope of a better future?
No. History as it stands is bad enough. Pessimist/realist that I am, I believe that tampering with history would only make things worse. The Law of Unintended Consequences is in full force here.
Yes just so we could actually see how it turns out not just guess and make up stories. oh and to see if predestination is really as strong as other people see it. Like kill hitler and see if there is still a holocaust or kill lenin and see if there is still a revolution.
I read a very good sci-fi book 'Timescape' by Gregory Benford, I think. Briefly, Earth 'now' is being ravaged by toxins due to mutated GM fertilisers, tens of millions are dropping like flies. A scientist discovers a way to send messages back in time - he alerts a scientist in the past who saves the Earth by ensuring certain GM stuff is never made. The people in the past are saved, but for Earth 'now' it is too late. The timelines are split, and their histories diverge. The Earth 'now' is done for - but those in the past have a bright future.
I think it adds an interesting philosophical slant to the question.
Personally I would be wary of meddling with something if I didn't really understand how it works. I wouldn't mind a pop at Hitler and Stalin though.
You guys are thinking on too grand a scale. 6 little numbers in my hand at age 18.
Seriously though...A lot depends on if I get to live from the moment I change it or pop back into current time that is now changed. I doubt I would change history if I had to pop back to the 'present' once I did it (especially if it was possible I wouldn't exist, or would have my existance seriously changed).
On the other hand, if I could live in the time I chose, I would interact as I saw fit, and if it changed 'history' so be it.
I enjoy alternate history and write about it but i like things the way they are. To those that would i reccomend the short story:
Aristotle and the gun. it can be found in a collection of such stories that i forget the name of. the jist of it is:
A scientist develops a time machine thinking how advanced would we be if Aristotle understood scientific formula. His plan backfires and he scares aristotle away from science, stagnating the feild forever.
(same reply is yes posted on another thread but it all works out)
No. Humanity is charged (by itself) to learn from our mistakes and accomplishments. All that is what history is. To change the timeline would do nothing more than alter the series of events, it wouldn't relieve suffering or ease progress into new mindsets. We'd still have to go thru the same types of things to get where we are. Changing the venue or time of important changes and events would only alter the text in history books. By altering what has happened, you also erase the experience gained from it.
Of course I would like to change history. The power to "play god", to direct the destiny of people, nations, the entire human race... hey, that's why I play Civilization! Computer games are a poor substitute for the real thing, but they're probably the closest I'll come to actually dictating history.
