Would you rename any of the existing factions?

While it's not really renaming a faction, it' annoys me a little that Elodie says "Franco-Iberia vous salue" in her first greetings. It should probably be "La Franco-Ibérie vous salue". I might rename it that way, because "Franco-Iberia" doesn't make sense in French (not sure if it does in Spanish).
It does make sense in Spanish, so keeping "Iberia" in said language would de-emphasize French dominance in the political union.

That said, maybe the French version of CivBE has the faction name translated to "Franco-Ibérie" nonetheless.

Sure, but she's supposed to speak French... I can buy the mixed language argument, but Spanish also has definite articles (like "el", right ?), so it's weird either way. It's a nitpick though.

You can argue that she is speaking 23rd century French which has been heavily infected with both Spanish and English (the current rising power and the previous power)

(after all how does 19th century French compare to 21st century French?)

Never mind the faction names, the rename I want to do is change "Aristocrats" to ... well, anything really. I mean, what where Firaxis thinking?

I think as soon as I install it, before I even run it for the first time, I'm going to hack the language localisation file and replace "aristocrats" for "entrepreneurs". So my first space ship will be filled with people like Bill Gates, Larry Page, Richard Bransom and Elon Musk - who all know how to make money energy (and some of whom really do have an interest in space tech).

And then my first fifty turns won't be wasted glowering at the thought of a colony fill of Marquises and Viscounts.

Modern aristocracy isn't necessarily linked to nobility. Rich technologists are still aristocrats.

But of course, people like Paris Hilton and Tom Cruise are aristocrats as well.

I like how people forget about poor Portugal when talking about Franco-Iberia.

Next to France and Spain, Portugal seems pretty minor nowadays. Besides, there's already a Portuguese-speaking power in play elsewhere.

Well except they don't speak Portugese in Brasilia apparently.

We aren't 100% sure Rejinaldo speaks only Spanish. But even if he did, it needn't mean Portuguese isn't the majority language among the population.

I'm guessing that if it weren't, the faction wouldn't be called Brasilia.

How about a crazy thought:
Rejinaldo isn't Brazilian
On the trailer we clearly see that Brasilia speakes Portuguese, both the voice of the command center of the spacecraft and the texts on the cockpit and door are Portuguese.
But maybe Rejinaldo can come from any of the other countries that form Brasilia (not Brazil), learned Portuguese to raise to commander but once he is far away from Earth, why not speak his orginal idiom ?
Just tried a rational explanation here

Judging by his name, I'd say he speaks both Portuguese and Spanish natively, but chose the later to communicate with the other leaders.

Or, maybe, it was easier to find a Spanish speaking voice actor so they went with that.

It's possible Rejinaldo is not Brazilian*, but unless most of the Brasilian colonists are native Spanish speakers, they're going to resent their leader shunning their language. It's not something that makes much political sense at all. Imagine if the US had a Spanish-speaking President who refused to speak in English.

I can buy, however, that he chooses to speak Spanish to other leaders because it's a more common language than Portuguese. That's good. :)

*However, Alencar is a Brazilian last name, and Araripe is a Brazilian municipality. Two such components versus a single Spanish one, Bolívar. Rejinaldo as a name (though it's a bizarre spelling of Reginaldo or Reinaldo) could go either way.

Indeed, Suzanne and Élodie should be fluent in Spanish too

While I get that argument to choose the language Élodie speaks (why doesn't she have a surname, by the way?), it would be bad if, say, all the cities in Franco-Iberia were either Spanish or French sounding. I mean, Portugal would represent roughly 10% of the population of such a union.

Most of the fraction names seem fine to me.

But Brazilia, feels weird to me, it's a future Brasil with most parts of South America involved.
A Bolivarian Leage would sound better (at least it represents today Venezuela, and most of northern south american countries were liberated by Bolivar) Even Rajinaldo has the name Bolivar.

PAU, People's African Union?
A fraction what represents a complete divided continent? I don't see Africa to be united for the next 500 years, but some parts of Africa could team up. The Nile Division or North African Alliance sounds more interresting.

Franco-Iberia... at least you know where they come from, and they speak French even in Spain if I may believe.
The (West) European Heritage makes it more suggestive, it fits in with the virtue bonus.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

short answer, no. Completely different countries ever since the fall of the Roman Empire, aside from six brief years under Napoléon, and even then they were still technically different countries.

I guess you made my point, France and Spain are totally diffirent in culture, habits and so on.
Still, it's the future, what will happen? for me, it's unlikely to see France and Spain to unify. Unless a new Roman empire stands up.

Hmm there is going to be a Big Mistake somehow, still I wont believe that Spanish people will talk French after that.

Actually, I agree with you that most of the proposed sponsors are kind of silly. The African one is particularly ridiculous. All of Africa? Seriously?
Unless we are considering them to actually be different countries/nations that are pooling resources to send an expedition into space under a single banner as a desperate measure to save humanity, which could actually make some sense.
It would make for incredibly difficult cultural issues during the space trip, though...
