Vanilla was so bad it turned me off to the game for years, until a friend recently got it. I was curious about brave new world and G&K, read some reviews and mostly they were very flattering. After installing the game it really seems like they did an amazing job with Civ 5. So to anyone else who's still playing Civ 4 after vanilla left a bad taste in your mouth: go try this game! For 50 bucks you can get the complete edition. Worth every penny.

One could get it for $15 last week with humble bundle. Plus tons of other games. But the problem is not the price, the problem is that merging board game and grand strategy for PC does not produce satisfactory results in both departments.

Is there any such deal left anywhere?

Not at this specific moment, but keep tabs on all kind of indiesites. You got Indiegamebundles.com which points out whenever there's a sale going. There'll soon be a Steam sale too, I recon.

And yeah, Civ V with BNW and GK is SO much better then Vanilla, it's a completely different game.

Keep you eye on Steam. I am still surprised that I was able to get BNW and all of it's DLC's a few months back during Thanksgiving for around 11 dollars..this also included the two new map expansions.

Wait until you see the 66% off sale.

Brew God

I bought (but barely touched) Vanilla; bought (but barely touched) G&K; then belatedly bought BNW, and have not stopped playing it since. That says something.

Yeah, I don't like the science penalty for cities in BNW, but it's still 5000% better than Vanilla.

Civilization 5 bnw has a lot of new features and benefits. The hotels are maintenance free so that you can get more tourism that way.

Yeah, Vanilla was like beta test mode, G&K was a slight upgrade and BNW fleshed out the game with tons of new content. Vanilla really is complete garbage compared to BNW or even G&K for that matter.

Now try playing some multiplayer games and get completely addicted.

IMO Vanilla was actually okay after the patch that made individual buildings correspond to various resources. The balance point was off at first too, but I think the balance point was off for Civ 4 for a good while as well.

I had the same feeling with every single Civ 5. With Civ 2 I really enjoyed the trade routes, roads, and wonky tactics. Civ 3 felt empty to me, but eventually I grew to like it. Then Civ 4 came out and it felt wonky to me... same thing. Civ 5 definitely took me the longest to enjoy out of all of them. If they launched Civ 6 as just Brave New World with more nations, I'd be happy.
