Here's the situation. I still have a Monarchy. I have Wall Street (now) and Smiths (3 turns), Sun-Tzu's Art of War, Sistine Chapel. I'm going to change to Republic after I have Smiths. I have 8 opponents.

The Zulus are no contest. The German scientists are not very advanced.

The Babylonians are winning the game. It's 1520. Their military is the same size as ours.

Rome declared war on the Babylonians. Compared to Rome, our military is weak.

Greece joined in the war on the side of Rome. Compared to Greece we have a strong military. I could take out Greece in a short war.

Rome and Persia have an RoP. Compared to Persia, our military is weak. Persia has a couple of cities and a ton of knights on the continent I just settled. Babylon has a couple of cities there as well. The Iroquois are the dominant nation on that continent and has RoP with Rome, Greece, Babylon, and Persia.

Rome is polite, Greece is cautious, Persia is polite, Babylon is polite (I just bought Metallurgy from them), and the Iroquois are polite.

I'm going to eventually need to take out one of them. Babylon has taken some hits as I can see it in the chart.

Here's my dilemma. Do I let them fight it out a bit then join the Babylonians and take out Greece? This would risk provoking Persia and the Iroquois, and definitely would alienate Rome. Or do I remain neutral and let Babylon get weaker, and Rome become the dominant nation?

If I go to war, should I postpone the Republic?

So which civ are you??

And please explain those graphics you posted.

I thought your complaint was "World War One in 1520" - meaning
the tech advancement was much too fast. And it is.

BTW, I'd try to take out Rome. I hate it when some civ becomes dominant as it gets hard to overcome a lead unless you make war, and that would seem to be difficult to do with Rome. Knock off the big guy at every chance - before they get too powerful.

Or if most of the world is at war you could put all your resources into science and pull out a lead in the techs as they will fall behind as they try to pump out military units.

The thing is that evrething really depends on the difficulty level... I would say, if your regent or lower attack Rome with you've got. If your higher than regent, wait until you see who will be the winning side then attack them at the end of their war when they are at their weakest point.

Well I'm France. Rome was the aggressor in the war. Then the Greeks went in against Babylonia in an alliance with Rome.

Tech tree? No we're just getting into industrial age. We're moving very fast apparently. I call it WW-I because it became a global conflict with now 4 nations involved. I pushed the economic part of the tree above everything else, figuring if I got that I'd be able to rush projects much easier. I got Smiths as well and am on Newton's University.

I marked the save game, and tried something. Wall Street came on line and I got a huge boost. Rome settled with Babylonia. Greece continued the attack. I made an RoP and deal with the Iroquois, and another one with Babylonia. I allied with Babylonia against Greece since I can easily take them out and get the rest of my continent. The world looks on it like I've decided to punish Greece. If I'd sided with Greece I'd be taking a major hit.

Babylonia is now gracious. Rome gave me their world map and Military Tradition for Ivory and 11 gold (so much for their alliance with Greece). The Iroquois just jumped into the fray on my side. Everyone is either gracious or polite except for Greece (furious) and Germany (annoyed).

This is going to get ugly. I've got cavalry (at a huge price for upgrades) and we'll take out Greece in about another 8 turns. I'll be as big as the Babs and Iroquois when I'm done (neither have a Navy). I've got Frigates and Galleons. I'm moving on Athens. I may not completely eliminate Greece, but they'll be on an isolated island far to the north. Their saltpeter and iron will be gone unless they make a deal. They have no horses.

I don't expect anyone to beat me on production until after medicine. I've got a size 12 city cranking out 24 shields with no corruption. This has become the cultural center.

Regent. This has been a tough game. I'm used to taking an early lead and sitting on it. This one will have to be a second half win. The Rankings are:

1. Babylon
2. (tie) France(me) and Iroquois
3. Rome

Yes I'd love to take out Rome. Attacking Rome is going to require building a major fleet on my west coast, to transport over at least 30 units (see below). That will take time. I'll have to ferry about everything I have over there. I need to eliminate Greece first to cover my flank. They just went into Anarchy which means they're either switching back to Monarchy or going to Democracy.

I've built culture up in most cities and have everything producing military except Paris and Rheims where I'm constructing wonders. They produce 20 and 24 shields each respectively with zero corruption. Rheims is the cultural center. Wall Street and Smiths shot my treasury up to +80 per turn.

The "map" was a casualty of formatting issues with the forum editor that doesn't accept leading spaces. Sorry. I'll try again. Huge map.

Hey how do you figure out the rankings? I only see them at the end of an era.

Check the histograph. it's one of the F6-F11 keys (check the rest out too, there's also wonders of the world and demographics). Also there is an H button on the right side of the window in your bottom right corner. D for diplomacy, E for espionage, P for Palace, H for histograph, S for Space ship if you didn't know.

If you're on a seperate continent which you have for yourself, aim to develop fully, especially since your the french and are not necessary a warlike civ like the others. Build your forces and try to set the civ's off against each other and come in and conquer them while they're distracted. That's if you want the easiest way to do it.

What I usually do is just be nice and peaceful and only go to war when people betray either me or someone else.

And f7 shows you who is working on what wonders.

That's basically what I did. I've got Babylon and the Iroquois as gracious right now. Babylon after I built a road through their territory. Yes, I know it gave them wealth but it also allowed me to get wine to my port. After I get rid of the Greek presence on my continent I'll have it to myself. I don't know if it is even worth finishing off Greece because they'll be pretty much isolated on a Tundra-Mountain island, simply because I'll get over extended, although I'll demand all but one city as terms of surrender.

I've figured out if I go to war on the side against the initial aggressor, I can take out opposing civs with little or no diplomatic fallout. Just make diplomatic agreements with the others. I've got all the ivory in the world. Just finished Newton's University. Rheims is about to go over to a wealth/wonder factory.

Greece is a democracy now, but since they were the aggressor in the current war, I've watched the city size shrink probably due to civil disorder and war weariness. I'm waiting for them to go back to Monarchy and implode.

Zulus are next. Nice of them to clear Barbarianland for me. I can probably pit them against Persia, then jump into a conflict on the side of Persia.

You could also spy on them until they come after you :)

And that F7 wonders key is very handy, for any newbies out there. Not only does it tell you what has been constructed, but what's being constructed, and where it is. This way you know which city to investigate to see if you're ahead of them.

At the moment, i'm playing a game as the chinese, and I'm building my military right now, since I've built all the buildings I can. Unfortunately no-one is fighting right now, so I'll bide my time.
