X,Y Wrapping

Because some of the maps only represent areas of the world, such as the American plains, and it wouldn't make sense for them to be a whole planet. The actual maps that are complete worlds have X wrapping enabled so that they are round. I don't think Y mapping is used on any of the existing maps, mainly because I don't think anyone has wanted the doughnut shaped world an X and Y wrapped map would give.

If you want Y-wrapping you need to use the tilted axis map option. Of course, it's still technically X-wrapping, but geographically it's Y-wrapping.

When are we going to get Z-wrapping?

I must admit I was a little miffed when I played my very first game and couldn't go round the edge of the map. I just assumed it would have wrapping as standard, and was even more miffed when there wasn't even an option for it. :(

What map type was that?

Sorry Karadoc, but in Civ IV, there are instances that the world is flat.

But those aren't the standard maps. Those are the special ones. If you choose a random map, it's automatically not flat.

Maybe we should change the name of Firaxis to Tom Hortons

I'm gonna have to correct this to say Tim Horton's.
I do so not to be rude/trollish, but as 1) a Canadian, and 2) I was born in Hamilton, Ontario, the city where Tim's started.
Call it civic pride.

I think a truly complete Canada mod would have to have Tim's as some sort of National Wonder. ;)

What, do mean "special", they are on the initial list of maps.

I may be branded a heretic, but, here and now I declare that the world is round!!!!

Scienide09, You may be new to Civfanatics, but you show remarkable wisdom!!!

Just because they're on the initial list doesn't mean they're not special. They are the same maps every time (although I believe resources -might- be randomized). The Arch, Continents, and Pangaea, however, are randomized. Great Plains and Inland Sea aren't. They're supposed to be localized, and therefore aren't X-Wrapped.

But it is standard. It's enabled on all the maps it makes sense to have it enabled on.

It is??

Why have I never seen this then? I've only played on Continents, Custom Continents, Great Plains and Highlands. Am I just playing the wrong map types?

Yes.

Great Plains and Highlands, while excellent maps that I play much of the time too.....are exactly what we're talking about for localized, non-global maps. These maps dont have X wrapping because that would make as much sense as taking I 70 East from Kansas City, KS trying to get to Kansas City, MO and instead ending up in Denver. Driving east-west across Kansas is long enough without being an infinite loop (although that would explain all the repeating Waffle House + White Hen + Gas station rest stops).

Custom Continents is a global map, and does indeed have X wrapping, but not Y wrapping. I havent played Continents, myself.
