XML Text Errors (Please help seriously struggling)

So I bought the complete edition of Civilization 4 a few days ago on steam. I have had Civ 4 sense it came out. But only on disc and without any of the expansions (I still had it installed as well). So I figured I would just get it on steam now so I could play multiplayer with my friends via steam. I also play a lot of Japanese games and my system local was set to Japanese. So buying Civ 4 on steam gave me three different games to download. Civ 4, Civ 4 warlords, and Civ 4 BTS. I figured I would download Civ 4 BTS because it was the latest expansion and probably came with all the previous stuff (I am low on hard drive memory so I was not going to download the entire other two games if BTS came with everything.)

Upon finishing downloading BTS I encountered an error upon startup. It was related to my XML and was talking about certain lines end tags not matching their start tags. I had no idea what this was and I was a little worried. But the game started anyway and worked fine. However I noticed whenever I went to a custom game and tried to start a match. A few of the options names were like TEXT_KEY_ then lots of other full caps words (Normally related to what the text said before) with lots of underscores. My first assumption was to verify the game cache, something was wrong. I verified the game cache on steam, but to no avail. I did a quick google search on this issue, but all XML errors seemed to be about unrelated problems (Civ not starting, graphics issues, or whatever) so I figured it was just a poor install and reinstalled Civ 4.

Well the issue never went away. I reinstalled Civ 4 and I still had TEXT_KEY_ ect. I tried playing a game and I realized the game played fine, but there was plenty of other stuff called TEXT_KEY_ ect within the game world as I was playing. Like the Espionage button (Which I don't even think I could click Q_Q) and diplomacy with other civs. So I looked into the issue in more detail and encountered a few problems similar to mine... only a few. And I tried to use some of their solutions (When there was ones, I saw numerous forums where no one responded how to fix things) One solution was that the System Local had to be in English (United States), that made sense and when I looked at the XML errors, I know in a few of the places it showed there error it showed /Spanish. So I can rightfully assume it might have something to do with my Language settings. I switch to English Local, nothing happens, I verify game cache, nothing, so I just reinstall the game under the English Local. The problem is still there.

Finally I start getting annoyed, so I go to reddit in search of answers. I guess the Civ reddit page is really popular at the moment, because from the moment I made my post it was washed away out of view. I only recieved a few messages, and they were all kind of like "Oh hey, thats weird. Hope you find out how to fix it." One guy tried to be helpful, but suggested "If this is a common steam issue, then surely there is a mod for it. Check the steam workshop for civ 4"... Well there is no steam workshop for Civ 4. I then figured maybe there was still some files on my computer that the Civ 4 installation was referencing that was corrupted. So I went to my documents, and my steam folder, uninstalled Civ 4 (And I uninstalled the disc version when I noticed it was there) I deleted the whole game folders for Civ 4, beyond the sword, ect in both My programs and my documents. I even went into the control panel and made sure things were uninstalled. I then downloaded Civ 4 BTS and it did not fix the problem. I heard I might need to start Civ 4 as administrator. I tried that, no fix. I tried INSTALLING Civ 4 as administrator, still no fix. Then I went to my XML folders manually and deleted them, I tried verifying game cache and it still didn't fix my issue.

After that I wondered about just going to the XML files manually and opening them in Notepad and fixing the issues myself. But there is so many error XML files and they seem extremely difficult to navigate. I was not able to do it. I figured there must be a more practical way to solve this problem. (I also think I saw someone caused problems with their Civ 4 when they screwed around with their XML files)

After exhausting all my resources and absolutely failing to find tech support I decided to come here, I know you all play these games a lot and are a lot more knowledgeable about this stuff than I am. I really want to play Civ 4 very very badly and don't really want to refund this game. How do you all suggest I handle this problem? If need be I can give my Skype and share screens to have others see the problem first hand and help me fix it. I just can't seem to fix it on my own off the knowledge I have currently.

I checked the technical support sticky on here but the XML problems addressed did not seem related to the XML problems I have now. And the XML parser linked that is supposed to fix the problems can't even be opened. I heard we should download the BTS patch and that might fix it. But whenever I activate the .exe it says I don't have BTS installed and it can't patch my game.

I run Windows 7, and Civ 4 should be patched to the version Steam starts you out on when you download it. I think that is the most recent patch?
(Another note is when I had the CD version of Civ 4 installed. Everything ran flawlessly. So I don't think my computer is incapable of running Civ 4. I have good enough system specs to run Skyrim on High with no problem)

Uninstall all what you have done, clear the folders and re-install.

You need to install Civ 4, then Warlords then BTS in that order. That is why you have the XML errors.

Omg! Lol You are the creator of Modern Earth XD You are one of the major reasons I bought Civ 4 lol Was to play that mod. Q_Q Unfortunately I did exactly as you said, I uninstalled everything, cleared the folders (Unless one managed to elude me, the complete wipe guide is made for Windows XP not windows 7 Q_Q) But I am pretty sure I got everything. I reinstalled each game one by one in that order, then I started each game up in that order. There was no problem in the base Civ 4. But whenever I loaded up Civ 4 Warlords there was the TEXT_KEY problem with all of the new Civ's. Then when I loaded up Civ 4 BTS it had problems with all the Civs from Warlords, and with a few of the options, ect. Is there any other suggestions on what I can do? I really want to play this game and your mod Q_Q. I wonder if I am not wiping ALL of the folders? But you can't find all the folders off the guide here with Win 7(http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=9018975) I also can't install the patches for the game (The patches are a .exe file, and every time I activate it is says my Civ 4 BTS is not properly installed and it can't update this. I assume because it is on steam)

Thanks for the recognition.

I suspect it is a problem with the steam apps install folder. I don't have steam so I can't help there.

Can you see if you can find a secondhand disk copy of Civ IV, Warlords and BTS on one of your trading sites.

Well I would like to be able to play multiplayer with my friends over steam. And I payed for the game on steam so it is kind of annoying if I just wasted my money Q_Q I hear Steams Customer support is notoriously bad. So I would like to find any other alternative that lets me play. I imagine there must be SOME possible way the game is playable? Would downloading the game second hand, then exchanging the XML folders work?

There is an option under the steam install pane to install original_game_Unsupported
(the folks who play Hall of Fame use it).
You could try that install.

I'm experiencing the same problem and would like to know the solution as well, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, xefjord started by saying in the 1st post:
So I bought the complete edition of Civilization 4 a few days ago on steam.

Is it exactly the same case?

First, I wonder if the wording is correct. As far as I know, the "complete edition" of Civ4 is not complete as it does not include patch 3.19.

Is it complete when you buy it through Steam? (I don't know Steam but I know that the normal purchase of Civ4 BtS through Steam is patched to 3.19). Try to check the version first in the Advanced Menu.

Normally, no XML error should come out, except if you try to load a Mod, as most of them nowadays need the 3.19 patch. Or Steam try to load their version of Civ4 BtS 3.19 despite the fact that you don't have all the updated files on your configuration.

Another note: On post #7 of this thread, there is a reference to the Civ4 Hall of Fame players. Here is a link to the other install in Steam.

Yes, it's exactly the same case. I've checked the BtS version and it's at 3.19 and I've tried the Hall of Fame method, the XML problem still persist.

As with Xefjord, all of the XML errors seem to come from the translation files and only exist in stuff from Warlord.

Then I suppose that you should follow kiwitt's advice on post #3. It looks like Warlords is not properly patched.

Or perhaps I should simplify your life and provide you with all the correct Warlords Text entries.

The content goes in the ...\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords\Assets\XML\Text folder or similar entry on your computer. Check the dates of the files and try to see if they are bigger etc. Ideally, you could compare their content with Notepad++, a free text editor for Windows.

Does it help?

PS: on second thoughts, I wonder if you should not reinstall it as you might get into other problems later.

I've uninstalled and reinstall more than a dozen times in the correct order. My Civ IV's version is 1.7.40, Warlord is 2.1.3.0, BtS is 3.1.9.0. I've tried putting the given text files in the folder you've stated but there's no similiar text file there to replace or compare at all.

Thank you for your help anyway.

Can you post a screenshot of your Warlords folder, with Assets and Python and XML extended?

My folder of Warlords contain 6986 files in 700 folders and is 574,095,054 bytes.

Assets is 3210 files in 256 folders and is 449,285,334 bytes.

Python is 661 files in 76 folders and is 27,517,305 bytes.

XML is 70 files in 12 folders and is 8,316,371 bytes.

Your versions are OK though.

Well, I don't know what you have more in Warlords folder itself but it's a big difference. With the same amount of files, your Assets folder is slightly less in size. XML and Python are exactly the same.

Then I don't understand when you say that you have different files in the Text folder. Which files do you have there?

What made you say that the problem was with Warlords in the first place? Can you post a pic of your 2 or 3 first error messages, please?

I suppose that you play in English and not in a Japanese version of the game.

The top picture is the files in my Text folders.

The reason why I say the problem was with warlord is because the XML error messages at the first start up all have the /warlord/ folder path to them and that all the XML errors in game seem to only be on additions from Warlords.

And yes, I do play in English.

The text files you are showing me come from Vanilla. Missing texts for Augustus & Carthage, for example, are in the Warlords texts that I uploaded before.

If Warlords XML has the same size than mine, you should have all these texts already. I don't understand why they would not be read by the game.

Try to put them in that text folder and see if they are read. They are all marked with Warlords in their title to recognise them.

Also, try to locate 1 of the Warlords text file and post it here in a .rar format so that I can try to compare them if possible. You can post it in attachment in the 'Go Advanced' section when you write your post.

Thank you. I've found the Warlord text folder but the files there are exactly the same size as the one you've given me and nothing change after I replace them with the given the file.

I've attach my text files and an image of what the error is like.

Thanks. What I would really like to see is the error message as it appears when you launch the game. Just the first three error messages. You can either copy the message exactly or show them as images.

In the meantime, can we make a little experiment? Overwrite your specific file with this one.

I'd like to know if:
1) you have any errors at launch with this specific file
2) you can see the correct text for both August Caesar and the Carthage Civ.

PS: before my changes, the file was identical to mine.

Is the error message put into a file anywhere? It only appeared once during the first launch and I fear that I would have to uninstall everything from BtS to the base game in order to get it to appear again.

As for the files, there are no errors at launch but the problem of TXT_KEY_LEADER_AUGUSTUS and TXT_KEY_CIV_CARTHAGE_DESC still exist. Also, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to help with this problem, I hope it's not too troublesome for you.
