A cool idea would be to give it a spell "land" and "fly". If it lands on a land tile it becomes immobile, if it lands on a water tile it becomes a ship (same mesh but "lowered" to the ground level). The trick is that it takes light damage by strong winds while in the air so it should be able to repair itself while it's on land. There may be "repair crew" crew type which increases regeneration a bit and allows it to fly longer, also "fair winds" spell may negate the damage effect thus making it a very useful spell for airships.
I like this idea - particularly if it would also mean that in flight only other units in flight or with the flying ability could attack it (and similarly it couldn't attack), and if embarking/disembarking has to be done under landing.
Also think 'land' should end movement, and to embark/disembark a position should obviously be landed
....though where all that leaves the AI is another matter!
