I can't imagine a person not paying attention to the AI!!! But then again I can't imagine a person letting the AI get so big and advanced that it can make NUKES!!!

No. That would mean an aberration of judgement when you first convinced yourself, and an aberration of awareness, AND a military f*** up of the highest order.

Fortunately, I only manage one of the above at a time.

Nope. I've lost by spaceship a couple times, but only when I was acting peaceful and not trying to dominate.

"Watch me with your eyes...I've been giving God a bitter fight.
I want to be just like you...then I'd be cool (maybe not).
Without you being here...I've been giving fear a welcome home.

I have built myself up for years in an isolationist kind of way to find that when I have discovered the other civs they have been much further on than I expected. I have usually been able to put the situation right though.

Yes, I have experienced such a thing MrLeN, and it's fairly easy to explain how it happened.
When I started playing multiplayer sessions I had read a huge number of strategies about how to play civ. Because of that my early game got REALLY good, so I will beat most people if I meet them early. However. Because of a strange twist in my incomprehensable cerebral nerves, I really suck when it comes to the mid-game (just after the discovery of invention and just before the discovery of industrialization, IMO)
So, there I was: Deity of the huge Aztec empire, superior in each and every aspect of the game and then little by little it started to fade into a hopeless pool of misery. At that point I met my human opponent.....
