You Set The Salaries

Well, from a communist point of view I'd set them all at the same wages.

If I can make the same amount of money as a security guard as I could as a doctor, and I don't have to spend seven years at university learning to be a security guard, why in Stalin's name would I ever become a doctor?

... or an electrician?
... or a plumber?
... or an architect?
... or an accountant?
... or a pilot?
... or a soldier?
... or a farmer?

Communism is insanity.

What does that mean?
It means that some CO who sits in the office all day doing bugger al should get paid less than a miner working 12 hours underground, or a doctor.

I don't quite understand why you think that people would stop doing any interesting jobs and only do menial ones. Surely you don't all choose your careers baesd on which one pays the most?

Slightly off-topic but can you guys believe that C.Beltran got over 100 million
for a 7-year baseball contract with the Mets? That is nothing but insane!
Where will it end? :crazyeye:

I can believe it...I just wish it weren't true. :(

At least I wouldn't. If there was two jobs, one which pays quite well and is rather dull, and other one which pays a little less and is a lot more interesting, I would probably choose the latter one. But I would argue that the main reason why people work is that they have to make a living. Really, what's the point in working if you can't benefit from it?

Also, in true communism, should any one get paid? We would live like ants. Only doing what's necessary to survive. Meaning no culture.

People get paid so they can buy chocolate ice cream instead of strawberry if they want...

In the other thread, I've outlined a procedure for what I believe is a functioning (if not ideal) economic system. You may have problems with its efficiency, but please don't say it can't work without at least giving valid economic reasons.

ah, see what i mean? Pro baseball is one of the very very few examples where we need salary caps and limits. Its going to price the consumer (the fan), and the competition (25 of the what, 30 teams?) out of being able to be a part of pro sports. Yankees, Mets, Angles, Dodgers, Braves...these are the only guys who ever have a shot at the top talent they buy from the smaller market teams who cant keep them. Am I ever going to see a good season again in Cincinnati? Will Cleveland have to have a firesale to get rid of all their good players so they can stay in their budget, which is a small fraction of the yankees?

OT, prehaps. But there is some relevancy here. There are a few exceptions when salart controls are needed.

Why do we need salary caps for any professional sport?

There are what, 14 players on any Major League Baseball team? There are 30 MLB teams in the U.S., so that's 420 MLB players nationally, out of 290 million people in the United States.

There are a lot more than 14 people on a team.

Even if there were 100 players per team, they would still only amount to a fraction of a fraction of a percent.

I believe what makes the united states unique is the fact that anyone can get rich, not like the ideas of socialist Europe. We as a nation are like bankers, want a loan? Well work for me this long and I will give it. Got a talent? Then play for my team and I will pay for college tuitions fees. Not very one has a talent but we acknowledge that talent and reward it with business. Communism failed because they were not a nation of free enterprisers.
