Do you play this out or re-roll the map?

Montezuma
Monarch
Marathon
Pangaea
No events
No Barbs

I got a coastal start, 3 clams and 1 banana. There's a gold on a hill just outside of my BFC, and shaka is going to settle a city on it before I can get a settler there. He'll be right on my border.

I'd rush him without hesitation. Better to take Shaka out early if you can.

especially with the fishing start . I would research fishing then straight to iron working . I assume you have some forests to chop and you will also have pop to whip . I would not even build a settler , just workers , a warrior and a barracks while I waited for ironworking to arrive then rush him .

you will have ample workers while you wait for IW and they can start building the road network to make your rush even more devestating

His UU also offers him nothing in this situation.

Maybe try to warrior choke him.

I'd gun for bronze working ASAP. If no copper, go for iron working.

I went for BW asap. Got some copper in my BFC!

He settled right on my border, then DoW shortly after. I managed to whip out some defense and held with a single axeman at 0.2 health. He put down another city to the south.

So you have 1 unit, and 3 enemy cities around you?

I would have been upset I accidentally set the gamespeed to marathon and of course I would reroll.

But if you want to play this - there's no reason at all it wouldn't be winnable. He shouldn't even necessarily get his second city before you, assuming this is BtS, the AI doesn't start with enough of a free unit advantage on Monarch, so you could most likely chop out your settler and claim your gold anyway. And if he does attack you could fend it off with axes, again only on Monarch so he can't outproduce/out-tech you by that much. (Most likely, you develop more tech/economy and he builds more military, but just be careful with tactics, settle on a hill near his border if you must. If he fails his first war he'd be done for)

^ only on immortal does it become impossible to beat the AI to founding a 2nd city without opening settler first. Some of the faster ones might still beat you to a site near them even WITH settler first however. Obviously getting a 2nd city before the AI without cheating is almost impossible...maybe with some joke settings that really limit land .

Marathon cuts both ways. Since he is ALSO AGG and has access to metal, he can easily ASAP axerush and proceed to steamroll several AI if he knows how to handle the maintenance.

Post your 4000BC save. I'm sure there'll be someone who wil show you waht can be done in this situation. :)

The last IU was a warmonger sandwich. Be thankful it's *only* shaka near you and not some super warmonger combo that starts @ pleased because some guy thought it would be good for game balance to give base hidden modifiers sufficient to allow that. Sure, make the warmongers always like the other stupids and hate people who they could otherwise trade with, JUST for the possibility of screwing the player royally if he happens to spawn near 2 of them. THAT WAS A GREAT IDEA. WAY BETTER THAN JUST LEAVING EVERYONE @ CAUTIOUS TO START. Let's make it so that sometimes the warmongers implode themselves and make the game easier for the players, and others they implode themselves trying to take the players with them! Yep, completely arbitrary difficulty! Brilliant.

 I love these posts.

Agreed. You're doing something incredibly wrong if you have BFC copper and DON'T run over your nearest neighbor. Impi = axe-bait.

DO NOT build workboats. Ideally it should be worker->warrior->chop 'rax->axe->axe->axe.... you get the idea. A couple of the axes will need to be whipped. Warrior choke might not be good because when you get there you'll just have 5 archers to deal with instead of maybe 2 or 3.

The only good Shaka is a dead Shaka.

What if you don't have copper or iron? Anywhere?

I just gave up on an emperor game as Ragnar. Everything went bad. The map was

- randomscriptmap, I was on a small continent with shaka (~12 tiles away) and kublai
- jungle belt where my expansion would go
- no copper, no iron
- horses 9 or so tiles away

Is this winnable? I have the initial save even though I've spoiled it. My horse archers were quickly put down by his impis. I couldn't really stall him until I had superior tech either.

With Jaguars , you dont need copper or iron , the can be built resource free .

Getting copper in the BFC was a bonus . When I suggested going fishing then straight to iron working it was on the basis that the water tiles slightly speed the tech to IW then you could build workers to start roads and pre-chopping forests . Then when IW is researched whip/chop Jags like a madman and take Shaka out.

I think that would have worked better than trying to hook up copper with a second city . once copper was found in the BFC that changed everything
