I have a 7 year-old desktop: Dual-core 2.8 Ghz, 4GB RAM, Win7, ~20TB space, I really need to upgrade this.
And whatever newish Macbook Pro I convince my employer to supply me with.

I have a bunch of programs, mostly the best free options available. If you're using something else, it's probably worse than whatever I'm using.

Programs I have open 100% of the time: Opera, Chrome, IE/Safari, Outlook, mIRC, Windows Live Messenger, Skype, foobar2000, Zune, utorrent, Keepass, Firefox, Notepad++, OneNote, VistaSwitcher

Programs worth paying for on Windows: AdMuncher, mIRC, CoreAVC, MS Office.

Programs worth paying for on Mac OS: Steermouse.

Learning to use R instead of Stata is worth the investment.

I didn't use MS Office before 2007, it sucked too much before that.

Thank you for the steer mouse suggestion. I never heard of that before although I do use an iMac and now I just downloaded the free 30 day trial of steer mouse.

I just have a laptop which is four or five years old, I forget. Dual Core 2.10 GHz, 3GB RAM, 280GB space, Win7 32-Bit. No idea about the video card, NVIDIA something.

Programs: Firefox, uTorrent, Skype, iTunes, VLC Media Player, Notepad ++, Microsoft Office, Malwarebytes and other stuff that I don't use very much.

Games: Civ IV, Starcraft, Sim City IV, Morrowind, and Daggerfall.

Mostly used for internet browsing, playing music, learning stuff, and chatting. Don't really need much else. At home in America I've got a pretty nice desktop computer but it's relatively dated by now.
