Just bought the game today wanted to get an idea of what civs the community likes and dislikes.

I'm a huge fan of Russia and the Ottomans (even though a lot of people don't like them). Japan is another nice one when on the war path. Babylon is another one of my favorites. Oh, and Rome of course!

I would have to say that America is rather average to play as. I don't really play as the British or French much.

Honorable mention goes to Greece just because Alexander is the most annoying person in SP.

Welcome to the forums, mr.b165! :high5:

China would be a nice pick for starters. Ottomans has a special ability based upon having a navy, which may not be a strong suit in every game.
Also India I wouldn't recommend for one of your first games, as they have a bonus for keeping your number of towns small. Egypt helps you building wonders, also that is a civ I wouldn't start with. Iroquois, America and Persia also have special abilities that makes them a little less suitable for a novice player.

Greece and Siam would both be good for a start, to help you engage with city states.

France, Songhai, Rome, Russia, Arabia, Aztecs... these are all good civs for a start.

A few great beginner civs:
I find beginners like Germany because you can run around and convert barbarians to your side.
France is also good because you don't have to worry as much about expanding since you have a good culture backup.
Egypt is good because they have a wonder boost, it is always fun to build wonders.

A few mid-level civs:
Persia is good if you want to string tons of Golden ages together
Spain is great, just explore a lot and settle natural wonders for :c5gold: and :c5happy:

A few civs that may be better for experienced players:
Iroquois are a bit tough to do well with, and there just isn't enough variety for new players to have fun with.
Denmark is definitely for more experienced players, over seas invasions are hard to execute
Polynesia is alright, but cultural victories are a bit tough

Favorite: Aztecs
-Not the strongest civ IMO, but definitely my most favorite. Those early policies are amazing. Jaguar warriors are also great for exploring.

Least favorite: India
-You're basically stuck building a few small cities for a while. You also get a pretty lame UA and UB.

I like Arabia and Russia because of their Strategic Resource modifiers. My least favorite would have to be Aztecs. They don't appeal to me very much.

Try a random civ on a random map after you've played a few games. Good way to learn to adapt to your environment.

I like Russia and Arabia. I hate playing as Spain, Ottomans, and Germany. I hate playing with Montezuma.

i picked random my first game and got India :( luckily im only playing on lvl 3 difficulty so its not to much of a burden.

India was one of the first Civs I played in this version. It was a good but a bit challenging for me since I was learning the new set of rules.

India can be great once you get used to it.
My first civ was the Songhai, and it wasn't random.
I guess I overestimated the UA.

Favourite has to be the Mongols. Not only are they just epic for any war game, they also have, IMHO, the coolest colour scheme! (yes, it matters!)

Least Favourite has to be the Ottomans....why, just why? What are they even for?!

Ottomans are lots of fun.
Okay, so UA sucks, but the Janissary is an amazing unit and Sipahi is above average.

My favorites civs are the Mongols (ability to conquer entire civs with two Keshiks, a Khan, and a Pikeman) and Babylon (because my literacy rate is just so high), and China is always fun, with excellent UB and UA and chill colors.

I actually like the Songhai, both because their ingame music is sweet and because their UA is fun to use with Honor and Raging Barbarians. I have yet to play a game as the Songhai where I wasn't incredibly rich the entire time.

I enjoyed using Germany's Panzers in past games, but I their unique ability just doesn't appeal to me. I don't like India because their unique unit and building both suck.

I hate Hiawatha and George Washington, both frequently sneak attack me.

I usually play modern Civs. Civs that still exist, like France or England. I don't know why exactly, but I like to roleplay a bit and playing as Songhai limits that. I like to play as the French and build a colonial empire, play England and rule the seas, play Germany and build up science and industry and kick butt with modern weaponry, etc.

You can roleplay with any civ.
Japan: Modern Weaponry
Songhai: Richest Country
China: Largest Country
Mongolia: Largest Country

There are too few UBs for my likeing. I don't like civs having 2 UUs instead of a UB. I don't like beeing forced to war in a specific timeframe to take advantage of my UU.

So, for me, civs with UB are much more apealing than civs with 2 UUs
