The Dutch: their unique building is awesomely broken for coastal cities, which are my favorite kind of cities. (My favorite age for conquest is Riflemen.) The fact that their Galleon replacement (East Indiaman) is sturdy enough to survive a Caravel counter-attack makes inter-continent conquest much easier.

too bad the Celts were under "Other" :(

My choice is Holy Roman Empire

Personally, I like the Romans for their strong Praetorians in the early game for quick conquests.

Persia, Because

1. History. I've always had great interest in ancient Persia, especially the Achaemenid era (both of the Civ IV leaders were Achaemenids). When I launched Civ IV for the first time and noticed Persia was one of the playable civs, I almost literally Woo-Hooed

2. Immortals!!!11!!11!!!!1!1

3. Traits. Cyrus was awesome in vanilla with Cre/Exp, and very cool now with Cha/Imp. Darius is, well, Darius. Fin/Org <3333, Although perhaps too easy.

I almost picked other just because it's hard to pick 1 civ. Reading TMIT's post on the previous page made me laugh because that's how I feel too: I like each civ for a different reason. :)

I wound up picking France because:
-I like all of their leaders at least a little (Napoleon first, DeGaulle close second, Louis a not forlorn third)
-I can understand them when they respond to my orders
-French is an awesome language, and the nation I would live in if I became an expat

The Incas, definitely. They have a great UB and UU, you can easily get an early religion with them, and Huayna is "industrious", which is good for me, since I like to build A LOT of wonders.

My two favourites are also the most powerful civilizations in real world history. Rome and England. Elizabeth is the queen of teching and Augustus can get some insane high scores; early domination win with every wonder captured or built.

Carthage. I like the history about the real Empire. In the game, Financial is awesome combined with Charismatic, so I can build a lot of units and promote them fast too. Also, I love the music!

No they're not.

S***. Probably just derailed the thread.

On-topic, <3 Greece, particularly Pericles. Great builder/techer leader (not the greatest at either, but very good at both) and phil/odeon are great together for culture wins – and of course the bonuses from CRE help quite a bit too.

I'd play as Carthage just because Carthage was awesome, but being a great civ certainly helps! Despite the hate, I find NC rushes great, and those traits combined with Cothon are a huge help. Not quite as easy as Darius I, but almost (plus you don't have to play as a Bloodthirsty Turk™).

Portugal ranks up there too, because I love expanding quickly, and between traits and UU, João is one of the best, if not the best (although you need to be quick on the cottages and COL). Feitorias fit in quite well too, although it would be nice if they came a bit earlier.

Like Bismarck quite a bit. The uniques, admittedly, are bad (4 engineers instead of 2? really?), but the traits really suit my style, and, well, he's OTTO van FREAKING BISMARCK.

And Hatshepsuth. My god, I really do have an unhealthy hat fixation, don't I. :mischief:

No they're not.
Yes they are. We're all speaking English and we're all using the Latin alphabet.

But I agree that Greece and Carthage are awesome in game too. I nearly always play a Western or Mediterranean civ.

I prefer the Celts, usually Boudica. I like starting with Hunting (quick exploration and many tribal huts) and Mysticism (getting an early religion - easy city border expansion with financial benefits later on). Aggressive is obviously a good trait, as is being Charismatic, especially early on, when the happiness cap is low.

I'm tied between the Byzantines, because Cataphracts are awesomely-overpowered, especially in my favorite non-mod scenario, 1000AD, and Hippodromes+ Colosseum make for a very happy city. And spiritual, that makes switching civics not a hassle.

The other tie are the Holy Romans, because I've conquered many a people with those pike guys in cool hats. The Rauthus is great for big empires, and the Charlemagne's late music is epic. Well, so is Justinian's.

America is definitely my favourite civilization. I am pretty hardcore too as I play exclusively on deity. So far the AI has not been able to withstand my Marine rush, EVER! I’m just so good I don’t think the AI, even on deity, has any chance of beating me. My Marine rush generally conquers the world within 1AD and that’s game.

My strategy is pretty unique in that it allows me to get Marines so early by using the world builder and putting down a stack of 20. Those Marines just ‘pew pew’ them selves to victory across entire continents in record breaking speeds. Am I hardcore? Most definitely. Am I the best player in the known universe? Probably…

I bow down to you in prostration, my lord! You are truly the master!

I voted for Ottomans. UB is freaking great. UU is situational but it can serve you very well if you plan for it. Its Mehmed I really love though, his traits really suit my play style.

That said, England is amazing as well. Victoria (ugly as she is) is one of my favorite leaders, and Red Coats are awesome. I also love the Incans, who doesnt?
