What is your favorite of new PTW civs?

My favorite is the Carthagians. They are industrious and commercial. Numidian mercenary is very good unit.

Easy: The Ottomans. Industrious, Scientific and a really good UU. The Sipahi is dominant for an entire age (8/3/3). Enough time to conquer the world.

The Vikings are great as well, because of the berserk. Also a killer UU.

The Carthaginians traits are great, but I hate the UU (too expensive).

The Celts' UU is too expensive as well.

The Ottomans. Scientific and Industrious is soooo strong and the Sipahi are awesome.

Gotta agree with everyone who voted Ottomans. They're almost to good.

The Carthaginians are quite good too; the Numidian Mercenaries, while costly, are quite awesome, and good traits too. I'll happily pay that 50% extra price for the stat increases.

Is it only me, or does the AI seem to be doing better with the Mongols than with the other hyper-aggressive civs (ie, Germany and Zululand)?

I voted Spanish. Another pretty face to look at, when going through diplomacy - as opposed to, eh, that other guy... who's hideous. :vomit:

Carthaginians, I like it when that guy asks me to "fight the system" everytime I visit him. The next time I'm playing as them!

The Ottomans due to their traits and the killer UU.

Scandinavia comes second due to the best UU and style. ;)

The ottomans are good, but I like the Arabs for their traits: expansionistic and religious. Their UU is also very mobile.

Korea is also good for making stupid jokes.

Carthage. In more than 70% of my PBEM and online games, I am them. Or Persia (but thats beside the point). The 2.3.1 is an awesome unit and the industrious is great along with the extra commerce

Ottomans. The Persians were my favorite civ in vanilla and the Ottomans have the same attributes and a much better UU.

I would say the Ottomans or the Vikings are the 'best' of the new civs, although they all have strong/weak points.

But can someone explain to me what is so good about Numidian Mercenaries compared to similiar ancient age unique units? They cost as much as legionaries, yet have worse attack. True, they don't require iron and you can get them a little earlier. So how is it exactly that you use them to your advantage during this brief window? Do you go and prosecute a war against a rival nice and early? If so, then I would think that Numids are not the most economical unit to do this: jags or babylonian bowmen would be far better and more economical.

If you're just using Numids for their defensive value, then the Greek hoplites are clearly better: they are 10 shields cheaper, and who cares about that extra attack the Numids have when you're defending anyway? The one type of enemy I can imagine Numids actually being useful against are barbarians, since all barbarians have 1 defense. Against any enemy with 2 defense or more, a Numid just doesn't have enough attack to make it worth risking 30 shields attacking them.

I've played the Celts and Carthaginians so far. The Celts UU is pretty good but not a killer and I like the traits (got a domination victory playing them). I really like the Carths - the traits mean you can just pay for improvements, UU keeps you safe and lets you build a bit of territory in the ancient world and being industriousyou can quickly whack a few mines in so the extra shield cost isn't too bad.
That said I have been keeping my neighbours the Ottomans *very* sweet as they ran up to and got Sipahi - we've been in an alliance vs Egypt for the past 10 turns and those things are killing machines on hooves. Will be giving them a go next game.

I voted Spanish. I think this Isa chic is quite cool and above all their nation specific traits rock. Worship the money :worshp:

Ottomans. And I'm learning to like the Celts. And the Carthagians. And the Arabs. And the Spanish.

I voted for Ottomans, but really, 'all of the above' would have been good.

I'm still working through my first game with them, so I can't give you anything more than my first impression of them, but from what I've seen, they are useful because they have great defense. I had a war with the Greeks, and they kept sending Medieval Infantry against my Numidians, and losing. Of course, it wasn't easy for me to go up against their Hoplites, but I solved that by using a lot more troops then Alexander did.

As you said, the only offensive use I've found for them has been against barbs, and archers/horseman/warriors. I let my guys become elite on defense, and then used the elites to attack the 1 defense units.

Overall, their unique unit is a superb defender, has limited offensive abilities, and is expensive. It's far from the best, but it still does it's work.

I'd say that the traits of Industrious/Commercial are far better then the unit. The French have a better UU then the Carthaginians do, as the 3 attack is useful against far more units, so if you want the Industrious/Commercial, you are probably better off going with France. Of course, their UU also costs twice as much, so you can't have everything.

@ Sirp - the Numid's 'fortification' animation is really cool. :p

Tough one. I wanted to vote for Vikings just because their UU is such fun to play. I wanted to vote for Carthage because I love Industrial / Commercial. I wanted to vote for Korea because they have cool colors and the wierdest and most useless UU. Wait, maybe Spain has the most useless UU. OK, so I even just played a game as the Mongols and had one of my best war mongering games ever (I usually play the builder / diplomat). But all in all - I've been playing a lot of Large Map games lately and all these folks with the early UUs just don't cut it on big maps. Can't trigger that Golden too early and the UU is useless by the time I reach anyone. So hands down it has to be the Ottoman. Now looking at others votes I can see I'm not alone.

Sipahi come at just the right time and can still kick butt right up to mech infantry. Industrious makes sure I've got the infrastructure I need with minimal loss of peeps to workers and that Scientific makes sure I can build a library in every town early enough to keep me on top in culture. Yeah, then when my culture starts to wane, universities at cost bring me right back in the ballpark.

I don't think I've ever played the Spanish. Every time I look at that UU I just chuckle and think - What for??? Maybe if I was playing with 3 civs on a Huge map...
