Playing G&K as Carthage on King level, currently in Renaissance, and my latest GE died of attrition. He'd only spawned three turns earlier. A Composite Bowman died of attrition on the same turn. Say what?

Happiness is at 19
Culture is at 890 ( per turn)+47
Goldpile is at 267 (+64 per turn).
Religion is at 23 (+23 per turn)
Four cities in my empire.

Neither unit had ever been attacked. I have yet to go to war with anyone, no Barbs around for at least 30 tiles.

Anyone know how attrition works? Bonus points for giving me the name of the file where I can edit it out. This equals some of Civ4's Random Events for game-breaking BS.

Maybe the Great People die so you can't stockpile them for later, but why would a military unit die of attrition? Would be nice to have some sort of counter for the Great People too if they are supposed to die of attrition eventually.

It's a glitch. Attrition should only apply to missionaries inside foreign territory without an open borders treaty.

I have never seen that happen. Great people don't die after a while, great generals last me the whole game... Bug maybe?

Is there any possibility he pathed up a mountain? That can cause death by attrition when playing Carthage.

This. I was playing as Carthage and the same thing happened to me once, so I would that's what happened to the OP. When moving a unit a long distance, the game plots the quickest route, which is often over mountains when you play as Carthage.

Edit: Ninja'd!

Hmmm.
The good news: Carthaginian units can cross mountains.
The bad news: it often kills them.

What's the point in the HP lost on mountains? I don't see any gameplay reason for it and it has seemingly screwed a lot of people (including me).

Only 1 civ can cross mountains. I imagine it's so you can't camp a ranged unit in the mountains and render it invincible from all units except ranged ones.

Yes, embarking should never be an automatic action and moving onto mountains should also act like embark and never be automatic.

I think the bigger question is WHY did you automate your Great Engineer o.O

Oh, you probably mean you gave him a path and he just got confused as usual.

Heh, in my game the barbs can do that too.... gave the early barb units Can Move Impassable. They got sneaky with it too...

I saw a death by attrition in my game today. I was just a flash on the screen... and I didn't know if it was me or someone else. I was next to Dido, so it was probably her. I looked up attrition in the CivPedia... no mention. Go figger.

Just think of the poor Carthage AI, it has to use automation.

Can only hop it takes a while before it's first general.
