In this thread we are going to discuss which mods you feel are the top 10 must-plays. They can be from any game from any platform and any generation of gaming. You can also post footage of a mod if you want, as long as it does not violate any forum rules of course (lookin' at you Hot Coffee). Finally, I don't care what format you use to list your top 10 as long as you make it clear what the name of the mod is and what game the mod is for.

So, with that said, here is Commodore's top 10 must-play mods:

1. Mass Effect: Reborn (Homeworld 2)
2. Third Age: Total War (Medieval II: Total War)
3. Escape From Zombie Island II (Civilization III: Conquests/Complete)
4. Space Opera (Civilization III: Conquests/Complete)
5. Space Hulk Mod, aka Deathwing Mod (Left 4 Dead 2)
6. Republic at War Mod (Star Wars Empire at War: Forces of Corruption)
7. Ultimate Apocalypse Mod (Warhammer 40k Dawn of War: Soulstorm)
8. Human Resistance Mod (Universe at War)
9. Fallout Mod (Civilization III: Conquests/Complete)
10. Age of Imperialism (Civilization III: Conquests/Complete)

As you can see CivIII mods take up 4 spots on my list. I'm not just doing that because this is a Civ site, but because I truly believe the mods made for CivIII are some of the nest out there that have been made for any game. The other ones are mods that have given me either just as many, or sometimes even more, hours of entertainment as the vanilla version of the game.

I don't have ten, but I have to recommend

1. Broken Crescent: Medieval 2: Total War
2. Republic at War, same as above; it's more polished and professional than the original game, and is much better
3. Brytenwalda: Mount & Blade: Warband
4. 1257AD: " " "

You'd be a fool to play SimCity 4 without the Network Addon Mod.

Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting. A quick Google search shows it modifies the transit system. I don't really have the time to read exactly what it does as the list of features is a wall of text. Do you think you could briefly sum up what exactly the mod does for the game?

Removes stupid bugs like corner connections causing Sims to go in endless loops and adds extra transportation options such as curved road pieces.

Anyway, here are some mods so good they turned into games.

What does that Soulstorm mod do, Commodore? I loved Dawn of War back in the day, a good mod for it might be just the thing to make me pick it up again.

It basically makes the game much larger in scope for skirmishes and multiplayer matches. I mostly play as Imperial Guard so I am more familiar with the features they added for them. For the Imperial Guard they added things like Conscript squads, artillery officers, Titans, and a bunch of other units. They also added much more weapon loadout and ability customization for each unit and vehicles. They also made the Imperial Guard work kind of like the Tau in vanilla Soulstorm. Just like the Tau could pick between Mont'ka and Kauyon to determine what units and upgrades they could build, the Imperial Guard can specialize in infantry, armor, or air power. This kind of stuff has been added for all the factions

It also adds the Tyranids into the game, gives the Tau turrets like the other races, and gives each faction some type of super unit or super weapon to use. Here is a gameplay video of the mod:

I would think that to qualify as a "must play mod" it would have to be a mod to a game that in its vanilla state is markedly weaker or even outright unplayable...therefore the only mods eligible for my 'must play' list are Oblivion mods.

A Game of Thrones: Crusader Kings II
Fall From Heaven 2, Rhye's and Fall: Dawn of Civilization: Civ 4 BTS

Both are amazing vanilla games and can only be played to full potential with these mods.

How does the OP find the fricking time? I rotate between Civ 4, M2TW (modded), and CKII which are all I can handle. And I play games way too much.

I've heard great things about Kaiserreich for Darkest Hour. I'm attempting to learn DH just to try it out (and failing at that, the dated UI is a hard stumble for me).

As for mods I've actually played, beats me. I find most of them transitory and never really delve into them too much. The only mod I ever really played a bunch of was Rhyes and Fall for BTS.

Caveman2Cosmos for Civ4, if you have the specs. If not, A New Dawn.
For CivCol, Religion and Revolution.

Being self-employed, thus being able to set my own work hours, and having a daughter that loves watching me play video games helps a lot.

Rhye's and Fall: Dawn of Civilization: Civ 4 BTS

This. OP has to give BTS a try, how can one get stack with Civ 3, when we have Civ 4?
RFC DoC is as close you can get to actual world history simulator as it gets. I don't know any mod for any PC game that accomplishes this enormous task with that degree of elegance.

If you play Banished, I highly recommend the Colonial Charter mod. If you play Empire Total War, I recommend Darth Mod. I basically can't play either game in its vanilla incarnation anymore.

Personal preference. I have always preferred CivIII to Civ4 and I've always enjoyed the mods that have been released for CivIII.

I skipped/missed one of the Civs in the middle, II or III. I wouldn't mind trying a "Dawn of Civilization"-style mod for Civ V, if there is one. Unfortunately, Steam's idea of organizing mods consists of dumping a big pile of them at your feet and wishing you luck finding the one you want.

Yeah, the workshop could definitely be much more organized than it currently is. I'm actually surprised it isn't since everything else on Steam is pretty well organized.

I'm unemployed, have nothing better to do, hardly any social life anymore.

(I'm not even that good at those games, after several years.)

Even so...I play games a ton, and I still only play a small handful. Truthfully anything outside some variation of Civ and X3 is a 'brief interlude' thing.

Well it's not like I'm playing all these games at once. Some of the games on my list are ones that I haven't touched in a year or longer.
