Your top 5 nations of all times?

My top four would be China, India, Greece and Persia. All four of these countries have retained their identity for over 3000 years. These four have lasted while numerous other civs, Egypt, Sumeria, etc have vanished or been assimilated into other cultures. I'd have to say England as a fifth, they've been the most influential nation in modern times, even more so if you say "Anglo-Saxons" and therefore include large parts of Englands settler colonies.

China, India--yes. Also Britain, Italy, and......uhhhh...........maybe Iran.

Well I guess I agree with Dolemitetornado, but for Italy and Greece. Obviously Rome owed Greece a immeasurable debt, but parts of Italy, since Rome were fairly consitently areas of either political, religious, cultural, or, commercial importance. After the Greeks fell to the Turks, their time to shine as exclusively Greek was on a long hiatus.

Britain - I like my own country, and for that matter any country that can build such a big empire when it began on such a tiny island :D
Modern Israel - Not it's politics, but one has to admire the ingenious way the armed forces conducted their wars before Lebanon.
USA - I'm a big fan of the Wild West and American Civil War
France - I like a country that can loose so often (esp to the British) and still exist ;)

Can't think of another that stands out a great deal

Malaysia - because it's my own country
China - because it's the country of my ancestors
Great Britain - God Shave the Queen!
Russia - gotta love being the biggest nation in the world
Egypt - simply beautifuk

I think except the threadstarter everyone seems to love these shallow poll-threads.

ancient:
China
Italy (Rome)
Palestine (Israel/Palestine)
Iran (Persia)
India

Modern:
China
Russia
France
USA
Japan

Sweden/Scandinavia, very small amount of people who have had a great impact on the world.

The UK, for pretty much the same reasons as the above.

The USA for introducing a reasonably workable and reasonably non-authoriative type of government.

China for sticking around for so long and never really falling to the barbarian hordes.

Rome, for being the inspiration of Rome: Total War

Sweden, for reminding Danes that we're not so boring after all.

UK, for being arrogant the good way.

France, interesting in many ways. So much of European history was decided in France. So many ideas started there. Good food and culture too (Except their look on their "superior" language)

America, for making good products I like.

All of the above nations (except Sweden perhaps) also have a interesting history.

Ottoman Empire
Austro-Hungarian Empire
Germany
Carthage
Phoenicia

1 Germany of all times but especially Bismark's era and the Third Reich
2 Mongol Empire of the 13th century
3 China of all times until Mao took over
4 Russia/Scythia/Kiev/USSR/whatever of ancient and modern times
5 Burma (Myanmar) of ancient and medieval and early modern times

In fact, I might be going to Germany or *maybe* China or Russia in a year or so.

I plan on taking an "adventure-vacation" to Burma and Thailand sometime while I'm still relatively young. But first, I need to read up on tropical diseases and parasites, not to mention work out and get into shape!
