Zacminor's New Video

Member of the SimCiv Crowd here (I am also an active member of Simtropolis):

Gameplay is first and foremost, which is why SimCity (2013) is widely considered to be gimped as compared with SimCity 4.

That whiteboard has notes on it. I think there's a list of stuff to do with trade routes, including Morocco. So there might be a Civ hidden on that whiteboard.

Not really...pretty much everyone in the "SimCiv" crowd appreciates the strategy aspects just as much as the aesthetic appeal.

Not everyone in the "Civ gamers" crowd cares about the "SimCiv" aspects, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are more strategy-minded

I see no debates

Not really. If they were, they wouldn't be playing Marathon or stuck at low-mid difficulty levels or not trying to beat everyone. Strategy is trying to make the best choice to gain an advantage over your enemies, not choosing which wonder has a better historical matchup or color coordination. So there, all in good fun. :)

Seriously, I can't imagine playing the game in Strategy View as some do because the 3D graphics and terrain look awesome. But just as two people can play chess without any kings, there's a reason why there are victory conditions hardwired into the game and its players.

Everybody who plays Civ is "trying to make the best choice to gain an advantage over your enemies."

Everybody.

Like I said before, gameplay is core for both sides.

Well I wouldn't say everybody. Note anyone who has registered to the forums for the express purpose of complaining about the AI pursuing a victory condition.

But yeah saying that people who enjoy the aesthetic aspects of the game try to ignore the "playing the game" part of the game is just silly

Remember all the pre-release G&K discussions about those saying that they don't play to win and hate having opponents that do the same? I guess I could dig those up from somewhere but the roleplayers really came out of the woodworks back then. Not as much for this release though, for some reason.

But you have to admit that this comes pretty close. I interpret this as someone moving a Knight next to a Rook because it feels like they look good together.

I just want to chime in here. I have loads of fun just "picking what feels right at the moment" from techs to buildings..........I love playing on Prince where my games take 400+ turns on normal speed, and the AI can still beat me, and vice versa..........I don't really look for the "best" strategy to victory........I play for the experience of "living/building" some awesome civilizations and just having fun with it..............and I currently have 571 hours in this game ALL on single player...............I just have that much fun with it, and I always play on the largest map with 12 civs and 36 city states.

Lest I be accused of being an "optimizer", I'm not. But each game, for me, is an experience of analyzing what went right and learning from my mistakes and bad choices so I can play better at the highest levels (or I just watch every minute of MadDjinn's LP videos). If I am not learning what to do better next time (as with anything in life), then I am not growing and maturing. My strongest desire is for the game in single player mode to do better and be more challenging with each release so I can learn to do better. It will be interesting with this release to see how the major changes to gold will affect strategies and how to learn what works the best. Same for tourism/culture, assuming they are balanced.

There was hope, misplaced as it happens, that the diplomacy fixes that came with G&K would make the AI play less like an incompetent human. It failed to do so. I certainly gave up any hope of them being able to fix the AI (and the diplomatic AI specifically) and I imagine a number of others have as well.

Chess does not possess the same ample grounds for roleplaying as Civilization does.

Don't get me wrong now, I play harshly for the win, but I'd probably fall somewhere in between (what was it you said.....) oh yeah a SimCiv player and a CivStrategist player.....or something like that. :)

I don't hone down to the minutest detail of how to "stay the course" and accomplish lighting fast wins........I just play as a reactionist, I usually have a VC in mind, but if my homeboy Atilla is my neighbor, well I think it feels more right to build defenses at the moment and teach that warmonger a lesson. I am a builder though, at heart, and I would rather build my way to victory, than destroy my way there......but if the circumstances call for it.......I most certainly oblige.

And the only time I put a knight next to a "rook" is to destroy the "rook" if it threatens my great empire. Unless you're talking about them both being my units, in which case, if it is a strategic placement to hinder enemy advancement, then yeah :D

I will say that the lack of Portugal's presence in this version, and my old computer's lack of a proper graphics card has hindered my effectiveness with CiV. I've since gotten a new computer (specifically for CiV) and the prospect of Portugal in BNW has ignited my desire to play the game as it is meant to be played. I want to be able to be a king of Portugal by the time the expansion comes out (let's face it.. Maria I appears be a tragic drag queen). :king:

That's pretty funny.

I do take solace that MadDjinn has been on the Frankenstein team and was probably instrumental in making the lump gold changes. More of that please.

You know what you need ? Help improve turn times. Strategies. Get better ? In. Game. Clock :D

No way. You know how long it takes for me to make a turn or to play a full game??? And we don't begin to talk about the amount of logs I keep every game.

Agreed! Anything that changes the game for the better is something we can both agree on...........as for my playstyle, I'm guessing you would liken it to using the Mars Rover to do donuts instead of making scientific advancements? ;)
