Mom's thinking did not seem to be as clear this afternoon as it was when I was with mom yesterday, but her doctors said that she is still much better today than she was yesterday morning and was better this morning than this evening.
She slept better last night and has her blood sugar a little better controlled.
She was in a much better mood when we arrived today. She got even happier when the nurse told us that she may be coming home today if her blood pressure improves. Her blood pressure did improve, but the doctor and physical therapist decided that her balance is still to bad to let her go. Having her hopes of an early release crushed made her very sad. She was crying a lot again this evening.
She kept repeating that they really ought to let her come home for the weekend and that she would not mind checking in again for rehab on Monday but that she needs to take a shower at home and wants to have access to Hulu and Netflix as nothing good comes on television on Saturdays or Sundays.
The results of the echocardiogram have not come back yet, but the CT scan she had this morning showed no change in the plaque in her carotid arteries. That means they do not believe that the surgery is urgent, and are recommending waiting to perform the operation until after she has recovered some more.
The rehab doctor is recommending that she be moved down one floor to the in-patient rehab unit on Monday for 7 to 10 days of intensive rehabilitation, mostly focused on her balance. He said that she has just enough weakness to qualify for Medicare to cover this.
The Hospitalist said that her most recent stroke was in the left parietal lobe, causing worse Expressive Aphasia but not causing her any more trouble understanding words.
The MRI also revealed some damage to the right side of the corpus callosum that had not been noticed on previous scans, but the doctor does not think it is as recent. It might have simply been overlooked back in November, or she might have had another stroke a couple weeks ago (perhaps when she was complaining of seeing triple).
