Why I won't be buying Civ-BE (even though I have money to blow)

Don't. Just don't. I'm excited for CivBE and disagree witha lot of the points JokerJace is making, but excluding people from a fandom because they don't like something is dumb.

You're 100% correct. My only thing is we're on a place called Civ Fanatics, what does that mean? It doesn't mean we hate the franchise. Who in their sane mind would spend their time on a forum of a game they hate? The Civ IV rocks, Civ V sucks crowd can certainly express that, but if that's the way I felt guess which forum I'd be posting in....yes indeed, Civ IV. To those who say I'm posting all this negative stuff endlessly so they will fix it. Make your point, as the mods point out, everyone is allowed their opinion. Do you need to make the same point 500 times? Nope.

There was a game many years ago I hated. I bought it, posted my thoughts, tried to like it and my final post to the forum was to explain why I thought it sucked.

Anyway, must just be me.

edit: That game was called Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires. I sure looked good....didn't play so hot.

edit2: That post wasn't directed at Jokerface by the way, it was much more general.

Well its still at the top of the front page.

If this takes after Civilization 5, it's a definite non-buy for me.

If it is truly new and innovative then I'll definitely consider it.

Either way, after the unmitigated disaster of Civilization 5's launch, I'll sit back and watch the dust settle. Then I'll make my decision.

Different strokes for different folks.

Agreed. And nice to see you back in the forums Thorm, been awhile.

Thanks. :)

It has been awhile. I've been playing mostly boardgames so I haven't been following up on things. I was on Boardgamegeek when I caught wind of Civilization: Beyond Dearth and thought I'd give it a chance and be optimistic about it.

Based on your posts, that's very clear. Obviously open minded and researched before forming any opinion.

Sarcasm is the lowest form of humour. Cease and desist please. :)

Anyway, after watching some gameplay videos, it appears to be Civilization 5 with a pasted on Sci-Fi theme. *Ugh*

So, I'm a little less optimistic now. Wait and see, however.

I do like how you basically build your own civ before you start the game, as in past games you obviously chose from past civilizations. That's new, as far as I know(never played smac or any of the other older civs.)

It'll definitely be rough around the edges on launch, not gonna kid myself. And it may or may not be a bad gaming phylosophy to rely on dlc/expansions to round out a game, but I think when the dust settles Civ be will be a fun game to play, for me anyway.

Just wish to mention that Alpha Centauri could have been described in a similar way to Civ 2, yet remains one of their best games.

There's room for hope.

And knock-knock jokes are the lowest form of humor. ;)

According to the German interview, MP should be improved. Which is nice to hear.

Also, you are both incorrect. /Puns/ are the worst and lowest form of humor.

Based on what the moderator said about the amount and type of questions that have been asked, it seems that most Germans tend to play Civilization games for the same reasons I do and care a lot for competetiveness, balance, the non-existence of exploitable features and an overall maintenance of a challange in replayability.

What a pleasant people. :)

Moderator Action: snip - please do not talk of fanboys or ignore lists, it is against the forum rules and trolling.
Please read the forum rules: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=422889 those were the days where 4 Horsemen of Apocalypse were defended as a valid and non-broken tactic... Where Engineer specialist was giving same amount of hammers as unemployed citizen ("hey nothing wrong with that, Engineer gives GE points so it's ok!")... ^^

Anyhow, I feel strangely pulled into Civ:BE, hoping that since they basically are revamping tried and tested Civ5 engine they've learned enough to provide a challenging and compelling title.
Also, 2K have redeemed themselves a lot in my eyes with XCom.

Last but not least there is this deal on GMG that allows me to preorder Civ:BE for 22£ which is not overly painful. ^^

Improved MP would be very welcome as the AI was poor in Civilization 5 and the MP experience was not up to par, to say the least.

Sarcasm, however, really is the lowest form of humour. I fail to see where saying the opposite of what you really mean could be construed as funny. At least puns are clever and require a certain amount of wit. :)

I am really torn on BE.

One the one hand, I really want this game to be successful. A worthy "spiritual successor" to SMAC is overdue. From what I have seeen they really try to adapt the CIV5 engine. And many of the changes are actualy quite nice.

On the other hand, I really fear that the stuff I disliked about CIV5 (carpets of doom, imbalanced SP's, brainless improvement spam, first order strategies [like "NC rush"]) will end up in BE. And while there are advancements, I really dislike some of the design decisions. I hate the lore/setting and the sponsors. Not having a UN/World Congress seems like a wasted opportunity.

And looking at the DLC policy for CIV5 there is this nagging feeling that features might just be left out to sell them later for extra cash...

Reinforcing that is the preoder policy. I already hated the fuzz they made for CIV5, but holding those map scripts hostage in BE while we only have 3 basic ones seems pretty "unfriendly" towards your cusomer. Certainly not reassuring.

I am also not sure if the 50€ price tag is justified. I'd probably pay 50$ (38€) and I'd certainly get it with the 20% discount on those 50$ on GMG (~30€), but then again that would mean I'd have to support preorder.

*sigh* I really wish that I could support BE without doubt, but I have been burned (including by CIV5 vanilla) and disappointed (including X-COM) so often in the recent past that I just can't do it...

I echo many of your concerns. I want the company to succeed so even though I am not excited about the game, I don't want it to flop. I would like to see Civ VI someday.

Is the price tag for this game really 50€?

Don't spread false rumours. Thanks.
