Unit making for Civ-III and unit making for Civ-IV or V are very different things.
Obviously, Civ-III units are 2D animations I render from a 3D software with its own kind of model, skeleton & animations; and Civ-V units are 3D models with another specific kind of model, skeleton and animation formats.

I can't just import what I'm doing to Civ-V (most models I'm using are too big for the engine anyway) and I don't have the tools and the skills to make Civ-V units.

So, short answer, no I didn't try and I don't plan to in the near future.
