  • No, I've never heard of him. In fact, I'm surprised he never even was mentioned in my old issues of The American Conservative (which I need to resubscribe to). I'm a little not sure about the emphasis he places on technology in his philosophy. It seems to be dangerously close to trans-humanist/singularity/Roddenberry-esque beliefs that technology is the cause/means of social revolution. That always seemed to be an ultimately an idea favoring the world-as-it-is because it would mean that until we have workable wind-power/enhanced intelligence/replicators.
The other problem that strikes me is the emphasis he places on decentralization of populations. I've found in my (admittedly biased samples) that face-to-face democracy is more practical in urban centers then in rural areas. That said, I find I probably agree with him on more things then I disagree with him on.
While we're discussing and comparing ideologies, I asked in the ask a Red thread but what's your take on the Tolstoyans, as that's what I'm identifying as this week.
No problem. It's just disappointing I can't recommend more. The state of serious study of Fascism is absolutely dreadful.
Imagine if people made pronouncements about Communism without having ever read Marx or Lenin, and being wholly dismissive of the idea that they were even worthwhile reading for understanding the subject.
Then imagine those people passed as serious scholarship on the matter.
That's where the study of Fascism stands for the most part.
If you're looking to jump into his more extensive work on the subject, Mussolini's Intellectuals is much more in depth, and much more recent. It's overall just a better read.
The other big name I like in the field is Zeev Sternhell, who adopts a similar approach but puts it into a larger context, probably because he's French. Gregor tends to deal with Fascism as something that starts, at best in 1914. He doesn't actually say it's a sudden eruption, and I don't think he thinks of it as such, but his books don't go back much farther. Sternhell speaks French, so he ties it all the way back to the French Revolution, mainly through l'Action Francaise. This is pretty much covered in "The Birth of Fascist Ideology." If you read that, you'll get Sternhell, and most everything else is variations on that.
Let me know if you can get a copy of Mussolini's Intellectuals because I actually have a copy lying around I can mail to you.
If you're looking for an inside perspective, the man to go to is A. James Gregor. Personally I think the man is a bit of a sympathizer, but he's a sympathizer in a good way for this kind of thing. Basically his method of understanding relies almost exclusively on going through primary sources of ideology, accepting them as the true content of the ideology and then presenting it to the reader.
He primarily does this with Fascism, but his more introductory text on this Contemporary Radical Ideologies. In that one he covers in turn Marxism, Fascism, Nazism, Apartheid and Pan-Africanism (shows the date that those were considered contemporary). The chapter on Marxism is likely to make your blood boil, but I'd be interested in seeing your criticism of it, and his chapter on Nazism is very good if you like seeing Dachs-esque pwning of stupid people. He treats Hitler with hilarious contempt for the fact that he has to piece together coherent ideas out of his ramblings for him.
Griffin is largely on the money. He emphasizes what seems obvious to me that Fascism is defined by it's radical tendencies, rather then any real conservatism. but he's not really one to get too much into detail, usually trying to strike a balance between fascism as practice and social phenomenon, and as theory. His big thing is the central myth of Fascism. Which is a very good addition from an outside perspective.
    Let me help you there.

Anyway, how's the co-presidential candidacy going on for next year? There's Domination-NickyJ for President, Double A for nothing, Skwink for Congress 2012, ZeletDude-GamezRule nomination, taillesskangaru's presidential bid, Omega124, and I can't find anyone else. But it's a lot of competition from all those liberal conservative US-centric imperialists so we MUST do something!
It's a sad day when you have to be told to be more open-minded by someone on the far-right ;)
I'm Catholic and I support the Evul Heretic Invading Unionists over the Rebellious Bomb-setting CommuPapists, so there's always exceptions to the norm.

When/how do we announce our candidacy? What are wour electoral promises? What're we actually gonna do? Are we SNP, SSP, Conservative, Labour, Librul, Sinn Féin, BNP, UKIP?
We aim to establish the Scottish People's Kingdom. (Kan' Sharuminar has already nominated himself as a candidate to the Scottish throne should Scotland ever succeed at seceding successfully, I've nearly finished on work on a £10 note based on Kan's avatar -want a preview?)

As stereotypical Scots, we shall always wear a kilt when posting -not that they can check on the Internet-, speak in yon braid accen', an take the opportunity to insert random Gaelic words. There'll also be lots of whisky and haggis EDIT: and kittens for everyone. What else can we promise?
Ah, we're both candidates for the co-Presidency. No such thing as a President and a VP. No sir. Two CPs in our ticket! after all the Romans managed with two Consuls, eh?
D'you support Sellik? We could do a nice OldFirmian duo.
Yes, um… wanna be the Sco'ish presidential duo for CFC? There's the NickyJ-Domination3000 presidential campaign somewhere, we could run against them as the far-left political candidates. I already have our party flag :p
Well, I lived in south Wales (Way-ulls) for two years, but that just proved the point that SE Wales is almost more English than England. :)
I'd be fresh meat! I have a very generic "British" accent, with a slight West Country twang (not Time-Team style though!), yet I still get ignorant yokels ask me if I'm rich or gay!
Do you live in Scotland? A friend of mine is English, yet lives in Edinburgh, and all his Scottish associates let him know that at length!
I was unsure what it meant since a quick search revealed nothing... if I wanted the state created by Genghis, I'd just type "Mongolian Empire"... :p
