"Colonialism - The Age of Discovery" by Eivind IV, updated version of Gapetit's ToT conversion

"Colonialism - The Age of Discovery" by Eivind IV, updated version of Gapetit's ToT conversion 2024-06-27

The Vikings were the first Europeans to reach the Americas, starting but then abandoning a colonisation process.

The first phase of modern European activity in this region began with the oceanic crossings of Christopher Columbus (1492-1500). 1492 marked the discovery of the Americas by modern Europeans and it was not long after this that Castile began the conquest of South America and the Caribbean.

Improvements in technology made the European voyages of exploration possible and made the clash between different cultures inevitable. The riches of gold and land in the New World intensified Old World rivalries and began a commercial revolution. Britain, France, the Netherlands, Portugal and Habsburg Spain, vied for world dominance.

The original scenario can be found on the CivFanatics Download section here.

Modifications:

The scenario has been made compatible to run on Test of Time and TheNamelessOne’s ToTPP (which includes the following features NoStackKills, CityPopulationLossAttack, CityPopulationLossCapture).

The unit, terrain and many of the icons graphics have been updated.

A few extra changes have been done to add a little more flavour to the scenario without significantly affecting the overall base game play:
  • Reduced the tech paradigm from 80/10 to 40/10 because it, otherwise, prevented players from researching more than 2/3 of the overall available tech tree
  • A few extra strategic type resources have been added to specific regions of the map (example 'Spices' within the Spice Islands or 'Sugarcane' to the Caribbean) which enhance their desirability for colonization
  • Each European power has received a few specific national units to replace their equivalent base game unit in which they are granted either slightly better stats or lower production costs (example Spanish Tercio replacing Improved Pikemen or F. Mousquetaires replacing Arquebusiers)
  • The Ottoman army units have been updated with their own European equivalent roster.
  • Powerful defensive 'Shallow Waters' units have been added near Suez and Panama to prevent players from being able to reproduce canals in these strategic locations.
  • Added randomly placed African and Native Tribal Capitol units which grant gold when destroyed
  • The events file now randomly generates naval Storms in all major oceans areas rendering sea travel more risky
  • The Middle East and Indian subcontinent has been given their own specific set of 'Heathen' barbarian units
Otherwise, the scenario plays and remains the same as the original.
