The current ones are pretty predictable and not at all realistic.

Instead, I propose the following:

Sharks – 1 :strength:, 3 :move: These would replace barbarian Galleys, early on. They'd terrorize exploring workboats, but would be fairly easily dispatched by Galleys.

Crocodiles - 3 :strength:, 1 :move: Only found on tiles adjacent to rivers/freshwater lakes, and not in Tundra/Ice. Invisible until adjacent. Throws a bit of a wrinkle into the mix.

Tigers – 3 :strength:, 1 :move: (like current Bear) There are plenty of maneating tiger stories, but relatively few maneating bear stories. So the Tiger is the apex land predator.

Lions – 2 :strength:, 2 :move: Much as they are now.

Leopard – 2 :strength:, 1 :move: Pretty much like the current Panther.

People just don't get eaten by bears very often, so the bears are out. Wolves will very rarely eat people... but they're pretty weak in the game. Either leave them as is, or out with them.

Who's with me?

Yeah right!

When was the last time you heard of a Shark eating a boat? You've been watching too much Jaws.

Don't ever wander around in Grizzly territory, you've obviously been lulled into a false sense of security. Not only are they omnivores, but they're highly territorial. Same with Polar Bears. Even ordinary Black/Brown bears will snack on humans from time to time.

Wolves are probably there to munch foolish Settlers.
I think sharks are an awesome idea!! Willem you have no imagination. :p I'm down for crocs as well, though maybe only make them 2 :strength:?
Or have them spawn a bit later than other animals, would make settling desirable river spots more challenging. :D

Mosquitoes should be a Siege Weapon. Spawning on fogged jungle tiles, Mosquitoes are loyal to the Barbarian State and can enter cultural borders and assault cities.

Mosquito
2:strength:, 1:move:
  • Doesn't Receive Defensive Bonuses
  • +50% attack versus Archery Units
  • Maximum 75% damage to enemy on attack
  • Causes Collateral Damage (max. 50%)
  • Immune to collateral damage from Siege Weapons
  • Can Bombard City Defenses (-8% per turn)

Ancient-era workboats were a lot less safe than Quint's boat in Jaws. :p

Source?

Tigers and crocodiles kill hundreds of people a year in the developing world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-eater). How many do bears kill?

I like it. Especially if they spawn on Tundra/Forest

Combat Wombats!

I don't care about realistic gameplay in this case, animals are just plain annoying and stupid imo.

Too much RNG involved in early exploration when your scout/warrior gets killed by an animal while on a hill/forest tile. Make early units auto-win vs animals when they have full health and ANY sort of defensive bonus, then I wouldn't mind them as much.

Taken from wikipedia: ()

"Its sheer weight makes a charging wild wombat capable of knocking an average-sized adult over, and their sharp teeth and powerful jaws can result in severe wounds."

"Humans who accidentally find themselves in an affray with a wombat may find it best to scale a tree until the animal calms and leaves. Humans can receive puncture wounds from wombat claws as well as bites. Startled wombats can also charge humans and bowl them over, with the attendant risks of broken bones from the fall."

Love the crocodile idea. I could imagine them making a mess of your fighting force as it crosses a stream..

I think of the bears as destroying your food supplies and causing your unit to crumble indirectly. A momma griz and two or three cubs can do a lot of damage in a short time.

I'd like to see polar bears ( and igloo goody huts! ) in the snow and ice regions.

I'd also like to see migratory herd animals such as caribou on tundra, bison on grasslands and wildebeest on plains, for example. They wouldn't attack your units, but they might attack your farms, destroying improvements. Eliminating a migratory herd would give you a one -time bounty of gold/food /production in thee nearest city- kinda like chopping a forest. Should they survive until the late game, they would provide happiness and commerce from tourism each turn.

Instead of crocs, hippos should be included instead. Hippos are Nature's amphibious tank with a bad temper. They also congregate in higher numbers than crocs in the dry seasons, therefore more of a danger.

Maybe orcas should be in place of sharks. They travel in pods, they are intelligent, they can work together and they might attack humans when hungry enough.

No argument on any of those points, except neither hippos nor orcas kill people in anything like the numbers that crocodiles and sharks do.

The only recorded deaths of humans caused by Orcas have been during captivity (perhaps 3 ?). That tells me that they are smart enough to let us alone or not leave any witnesses, unless they have nothing to lose.

As I recall, Animal Planet claims that hippos kill more people than any animal in Africa, due to their territorial nature and teeth like tent stakes. People go to rivers for water, laundry, fishing, transportation...and become casualties.

I always thought that flying sheep would be a good air defense unit. ;)

Llamas can be dangerous, too. You should never turn your back on a llama.
