Ok lets get a poll going for numbering units. Just like they did in civ rev.

EDIT: Every unit atuomaticly gets named 1st legion, 2nd Armor, etc when created.

Most people didn't play CivRev.

Don't post a poll for something without explaining what it is you're asking.

I'll try to explain what he means. In Civ Rev every unit that became a veteran acquired a number such as 1st legion or 4th tank, based on how many number slots were filled. You could get repeats if a unit died or became an elite, in which it got renamed by the promotion it acquired such has immortal tank for taking the medic upgrade.

I thought civ rev just gave every unit a number the moment it was created. That's what I going after. But thanks anyways.

You must build a lot of Barracks then :p

I seem to think that all units got numbered it was then thye got abilitird they became stealth legion or whatever, so tjhey had to be veteran... well i dunno.

IMO, they should have a "name". For those who care, it adds flavor. For those who don't, it doesn't harm them.

By default the game should give them the generic 1st, 2nd... etc. in order. And allow people to manually change to something they like afterwards.

It will be useful for people doing historic scenarios.

But what about the people who simply don't care for it.

Like you said, for them it doesn't matter. I think they won't even notice theres a unit "name".

All they remember is that they have a "Legion on route to Rome" or a Catapult on the "hill by the river"...etc...

I'm not sure what the point of autonumbering is, but I guess I'm not opposed to it as long as you can still customise the name of any unit.

You can already do this in Civ IV. Click on the unit name and change the name to "Legio IX Hispano Victrix" etc.

I'm sure we'll still be able to do this in V. And with fewer units that are more likely to be upgraded it will be used more.

What;d I'd personally prefer (don't eat me for this) is the LOR style of putting the city the unit was built in in parentheses with the units actual type next to it. Numbering might be ok, but both of these are for modders to do, I don't see the point of working on something so unessentail when they could work on other things.

No you pointed out two types of people, the people that want it and the people that don't care one way or the other. You seem to be blind to the fact that there are people who simply do not want it at all.

a bit pointless, your not really going to remeber that Spearman number 14 is your favourite and hunt for him each turn to make sure he's alright.
What would be a better implementation to the game is the ability to personalise units give the names and so on.

Why do not want it at all? It wouldn't effect gameplay at all.

It depends on the survivability of the units. In Panzer General you could have a unit in Poland survive through the whole game until you defeated all of the allied forces, upgrading it throughout the campaigns.
In civ4 units are a bit too expendable for there to be much point of numbering them, I guess it might help with sorting them on some occasions.
If units in civ5 as stated are more likely to survive engagements than in civ4 and if constant upgrades is also an effective practice rather than replacing them then being able to name them would be a good feature.

Personally i want it as an optional feature, I was merely pointing out, that there are people who simply don't want it at all. And i dont know why, your guess is as good as mine.
