¿Do you name your units?

As Indonesia or Maori, I like naming frigates and battleships as “Fist of Moana” and “Maui’s Left Hook”. It’s a little ahistorical for Indonesia, but I don’t care.

As Norway, the same units are “Mjolnir” and “God of Hammers”.

Sometimes I’ll do similar as others, but those are the ones I do every time. Always the battleships.

For city names, I've used things like elements (think periodic table), local towns here in Tasmania, star names. I like themes, just not necessarily Firaxis' themes. The thought of a bunch of Zulu towns all named after different kinds of pasta amuses me.
Fun

Personnaly on big maps, I begin to struggle to remember where is which city, so I rename all of them into the real geography of a real country / continent (e.g. LA in the west, SF a bit north of it, NY in the east, etc.). This allows me to remember which is where.

Renaming all the cities I capture as Macedon to Alexandria. Sweet, sweet historical accuracy...

short answer would be a no. In fact I sometimes do when my armies become big and I need to identify quickly a unit specialisation (if any), like a crossbow bent on wall-hatching rather than killing units.

I dont do it. But if you want to rp a bit as spain, you can call your first 3 caravels, Pinta, Niña & Santa Maria. Those were the ships Cristobal Colon used when searching for the "new world"

The thing is that I find all spanish ship names quite boring... The majority are saints, spanish regions or unspired things like that.
I always liked more the french names for their ships (they had saints too, but were, in my opinion, cooler names):
Superbe, Magnifique, Foudroyant, Orgueilleux, Ambitieux, L'arrogant, le Terrible, etc.

That said, I always like to change names onmy units in every game. The first time was in the game "Star wars Empire at war" where I added to the files extra names for the imperials STD. They had pretty good names!
I always do the same for my units in Total wars games.

I try to fit the names with the culture I'm playing (a new Republic unit will not have a name like "the decimator", as it fits more an Imperial one) so for this game with Spain I mixed the two concepts.

Religious theme + strong/intimidating Imperial names = Covenant fleet names.

I checked the list of covenant ships name and it is fantastic! They are just what I was looking for. Very poetic but intimidating names.
I think I will make some extra names myself (with somekind of liturgic dictionnary) so I can use them on other Catholics civs!
I want my friends to identify every ship they encounter! and I want this ship to have an imposing name :P

"Oh no, it's the "Divine Eradication", this ship has killed 10 of my ships! we have to escape him!"

Way off topic, but how do you do that? And can you give names to the Consortium ships too?

I didnt say they would be interesting, just RP :goodjob:
"El martillo de la Justicia"/ "Justicia divina", "El matador del mar" (this one is the name they put for Salazars ship in the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie). Something like that maybe?
By your nickname I assumed you were spanish speaker too. I can translate some names for you if you are not.
"La magnifica", La orgullosa", "La ambiciosa", "La arrogante", "La terrible"... "La eradicacion divina" .....

Yeah! "el matador del mar" sound quite good! I love "divine justice" too, very emblematic of what I'm looking for!

(I'm spanish speaker too!, in fact I'm translating the names of the covenant ships the best I can).
Did you studied Roman Law and they gave you the examples with Ticio too? That's the origin of my nickname :P

I like to put the names in the original language of the Civ, so when playing as Catherine I put French names, when playing USA in English, etc by far my favorite is when playing Rome. I always had the same 2 legions in every total war game (roman period) so I always give 2 legionaries these names!

And thank you very much for the offer! (if you want a translation in French, I can give it to you). The only time I used historical names for ships was in EUIV, using the Flag ships dlc ("Santisima Trinidad when playing as Castile, Victory when UK and Botafogo when Portugal), but now that I have discover these cool names I will use them too next time hahahaha

I think you can do it for every faction. I do not remember well since it was quite a long time ago, but if you enter the game files, you will find an xml specific for the ships names. You can change them there, and add more if you like. i found them by hazard looking for a way to augment the number of ships in space battles.

I only played with the Empire and the Rebellion, as the Consortium was way OP to be remotely fun, but I think they have an xml for their ships too.

For cities:

Random City Names randomizes the order of the list of names for each Civ, after the capital, for each new game.
Rosetta - Dynamic City Names changes city names to match the language of the occupying Civ. iirc, names of City-States appear on the map in their language, but they're in the drop-down list with the common names, but I can't remember if that's a feature of the base game or of this mod. At any rate, there are a couple of City-States whose native name is so different from the common name that I sometimes have trouble figuring out who is who.

I confess to also having a perverse desire to occasionally drop in names that are, shall we say, 'unofficial'.

For example, Spanish ship names might be a dull list of religiousities, but the biggest of them, the Santisima Trinidad (the only 4 - deck Ship of the Line in the Napoleonic Wars) was nicknamed by its own crew "El Ponderoso". Guess which name I use for my first Frigate or Battleship when playing as Spain?

And of course, one of my French ships is always the "Poulet de Mer" . . .

If you can't have whimsy in a game, why play?

Not really, but it rang a bell, perhaps from learning history in school, or from Patricio being a spanish name and sounding similar, Im not really sure

Nope. Darla-Angel-Dru-Spike.

I also name the first ranged troop to get to double-shots Shooty McShootface. I’m easily amused.
hahahahahha I'm going to borrow this name!
I got surprised, I expected more people renaming things in Civ. I supposed it depends if you like to roleplay a little.

I always rename ships and redcoats as England. Love having Nelson as admiral to HMS Victory. Also enjoy renaming captured unique ships - sometimes to insult the leader I captured them from - My favourite barbary corsair name is Terror of the Turks, and I do like having the Flying Dutchman. It's a shame the AIs still seem reluctant to make their unique ships. I play on marathon so was pleased they lowered the promotion limits in a recent update as before it could be difficult without Lysefjord or Terracota Army.

I love renaming my units!

But I HATE how it's implemented in the Civ series. Why do I have to wait for the unit to be promoted twice before I can rename the unit? Why can't I rename the unit afterwards?

Also...character limit? Really?!

Also, why doesn't the name populate in any meaningful roster that would allow the player to organize his forces.

There's a Mod called simply "Unit Rename" that allows yo to name units without any promotions. I never play without it any more.

Still has the character limit, though, which is a shame. I so much want to have a Russian infantry unit named:
13th Guards Rifle Poltavskaya Order of Lenin, twice Order of the Red Banner, Order of Suvorov and Kutuzov Division.

But maybe that's just me . . .
