.01 - Guerrillas!

- You'll notice from the city screen above that science has been turned down on the final turn of Paper to maximize income. Don't forget to turn it up again next turn (or right away if you prefer the beaker overflow). Incidentally, I kept the scientists from the previous turnset to help keep research going while tinkering with the economy.
- On the spoiler screenies you'll see that two workers have been sent down to improve Numidian. Feel free to send more and build a road if you want, but beware of barbies in the area!
- Not having iron is a real PITA, cos we can't build guerilla crossbows either. Did I mention that we need more units?

Thanks to the dot for scribing for me and having this "slightly twisted" idea in the first place :crazyeye:

I've read the report and will pause 24 hours to give a chance for discussion and or suggestions.

going to need a skip (sorry to have waited to ask for it). Business travel has become more and more... a pain. Too bad there's a paycheck attached!

Basically uneventful turnset, except all the barb troubles.

dot01-AD1406-barb-trouble.jpg

dot01-AD1430-barbcity.jpg

Got Paper, made some trades and got optics, theology, maps and lots of gold. We basically uncovered the world, me think. Should be able to trade for guilds too, but on one turn Izzy doesn't want to trade guilds, and on the next, she is but got paper already :gripe:

I don't think we are in the position to race for liberalism, but we do have scientist to bulb education (which we should).

dot01-AD1460-Education.jpg

dot01-AD1460-tech-sit.jpg

I am surprise by the lack of barracks in a few cities ... i don't see how we could fulfill the variant requirement of vassalizing one Civ (let alone eliminating another) before gunpowder or even modern warfare ... seeing this map hinders all terrains and is Normal speed (meaning by the time our army crawl into position, they are obsoleted). But I did my best adding a few spears (needed since we are facing mainly barb horse archers recently).

Played my turnset.

On the very first turn i bulbed education as grey suggested. And good news, we had the monopoly of that tech. Evalueted trades with everyone, and had some conclusions.

Izzy and Saladin where the only ones researching education already.
Trading with izzy wasnt possible (maybe she had more :science:)

I thought that saladin could be out teched by us so i made the following trade:

Civ4ScreenShot0010-1.jpg

To support a higher tech rate i got the only money i could

(cancel this after liberalism if u want)
Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

(i know this is a crappy trade, but everyone has thology anyways, and we could get a positive diplomatic impact with him out of this)
Civ4ScreenShot0009-1.jpg

Note: before making these trades i lost 1 turn researching gunpowder because i was :smoke: ... in fugured speech

continued our efforts to spread the true faith, but failed misserably  (note that toku is christian now)

I think we sould get Nationalism and switch to nationhood, maybe that way we can produce a reasonable military to start a war.
There is a barb city close to our borders with iron in its fat cross.. its defended by 3 longbows, so in the next turnset o so we sould try to capture it
On other barb notes, the barbarian state captured a crappy tokugawa city, it was fun to know about that :D

Not a got it. I'm sick and in bed. And that's where I'll stay for today.

Scowler, could we have a swap? That'd be well appreciated.

I didn't get a chance to play this yesterday, but I'll try to manage a few turns later today, if you're not yet up and about.

I've been a bit busy over the last couple of days, so I've only been able to play 5 turns - enough find out the result of the Liberalism race. They weren't particularly eventful (fortunately). Some points to note:

- I immediately hired an Artist at Numidian. It costs us a single turn on the Dun (2 -> 3 turns) but doesn't affect growth. Reasoning: I think I need a bit more convincing about grabbing that Iron resource with a city. The barb city (I assume Crotazzo was talking about Apache?) is in a shocking location, and I'm not sure there are any satisfactory alternatives. The other possible way to grab the iron would be through cultural expansion. This is hardly any better, taking 34 turns for a single artist (two artists would take 17 turns, but stagnate Numidian), and the barb city will have to be taken out anyway at some point, but I'd like to have a Plan B in preparation. And speaking of culture, I think one of the two missionaries currently in production should be sent down to spread Buddhism here. There's also the possibility of a few turns of Free Speech after Liberalism, if the capital can spare the hammers and gold for a short while. But this is all open for discussion.

- We had a few requests and demands from our neighbours. Wang wanted us to stop trading with Peter, but I said no as it would have left the capital unhealthy. He later demanded Education, but again I told him where to go. So he is still annoyed with us.

Also asking for Education were Toku and Huayna. I said no to Toku (this happened several turns before Liberalism was due so I decided to play it safe): he was Cautious and remained Cautious. Huayna appeared the turn before Liberalism was due so I decided to say yes, and he is now Friendly with us. This is probably just as well, since he currently has two stacks fortified in our territory. He was probably just sending them innocently down towards Apache, but I have an overly suspicious mind . . . :p

civ4warlords20071001105zp4.jpg

- I did some begging of my own and managed to persuade Ragnar to donate Drama to "a good friend".

- Liberalism is due next turn and nobody else has researched it yet so it looks like we are home and dry. I think this might be a good point to stop and have a discussion about where we are going to take this game. The religious spam should be self-explanatory, but what victory are we heading for? (I think Diplomatic was mentioned earlier?) Which civs are we targetting for vassalising and annihilation? What are the most efficient routes to these goals?

It is worth noting that Peter, Izzy, and Huayna already have Gunpowder. Peter also has Nationalism. Wang Kon, Shaka, and Saladin have grabbed Printing Press.

civ4warlords20071001111ta7.jpg

There is the possibility of getting some trade out of Education, but it seems the others have already invested some research into it as they are not offering very good deals, if at all. Izzy is willing to consider either Banking or Music, plus World Map and 130g. Perhaps we should take what we can get before Huayna gives it to her?

civ4warlords20071001111sz4.jpg

Any other thoughts or suggestions before we continue?

Save for perusal

Gentlemen,

I'm sorry. RL is giving me hell and doesn't allow me to check into here as frequently as I'd like. So I have to drop out for some time. But I'll be with you every now and then and lurking and maybe commenting. ;)

So we possibly have a free slot - if you want to pick up another player.

Sorry again.

Well we are clore to liberalis, wohooo!!

About grabbing the iron with culture its a good idea, and as we are spiritual it wont hurt that much to run 5 turns or so of free speech.

About the tech to grab with nationalism i was thinking nationalism for nationhood. Our cities are safe in the happy cap, so we can draft a good stack (i really dont know that much about drafting, so please someone confirm this, and what kind of unit we will get drafting)

About the civ anhilation, i really think it should be louis, as he is behind in thech and in other aspects. The vassalization will be the hard part.

One thing that could trash the game for us is being at war with louis and the someone strong like shaka vassals him automatically declaring to us. I saw that happen a couple of times, and this time might happen too.

we can probably take 2 or 3 of his cities and then capitulate him when the option becomes available. then we should consider finishing him off a little later.

Sorry to hear that dot :( .. i vote for onother player taking a slot in, this is an epic game so everyone will have some more fun for a while.
Whenever dot can come back, it wont hurt to add 1 more player to the rooster.

Loius? Napolean you mean? Well, it will be either France or Korea. Just mix and match the vassal and genocide. But I seriously don't see how that can happen before the age of gunpowder units.

Go ahead with the trade i say. I would take Nationalism with Lib and start trading around for Gunpowder and Printing Press.

An alternative is to trade for Gunpowder now (if possible) and take chemistry with Liberalism.

--

Scowler, I presume you are continuing with your turns ... if I am mistaken, please let me know.

Yes, I am. Unfortunately, I'm also finding it difficult to fit in turn sets at the moment, hence the delay.

Crotazzo said:
Well we are clore to liberalis, wohooo!!

I forgot to say, good job setting this up for us! :goodjob:

Thanks, both of you, for those comments. Let's proceed along those lines. I was also thinking about trading Gunpowder then taking Chemistry with Liberalism, but nobody is willing to let us have Gunpowder yet. It is either redded-out altogether or we just don't have enough to offer in return.

We definitely need another player, in my opinion. Perhaps even two, given the time contraints that both Bob and I seem to be feeling.

I'll try to have the remaining turns up within the next 24 hours.

I started by making the Banking trade with Izzy. This revealed that Economics had not yet been researched. Despite what we said about Nationalism I decided that this might be worth taking, given the problems with our economy at the moment. The extra trade route from Free Market will bring in extra cash from those few cities that don't already have Castles. More important, I think, is the free Great Merchant.

civ4warlords20071006122iw8.jpg

The Merchant will bulb approx. half of Printing Press. We're currently researching at 100% so that would be worth around 7 turns. The alternative is a trade mission, so in the meantime I've sent him off to Huayna's lands. As things stand at the moment he would give us 2250g for a mission in Cuzco; alternatively the next player could move him on to Ollantaytambo to see if he can get any more there.

civ4warlords20071006130ka2.jpg

With Liberalism in, I used it to make the following trades.

civ4warlords20071006123cu9.jpg

civ4warlords20071006123un5.jpg

There's always the possibility that HC might go Free Religion and drop back to Pleased, but I think that risk is worth taking: he has surprisingly few Buddhist cities anyway at the moment, so it is definitely worth sending more missionaries. In the case of Peter, Free Religion would improve relations with us, which I'm sure is a good thing.

Civics were switched. Free Speech, as discussed, is temporary to help out the borders at Numidian. In fact, I also switched the build in that city to Culture, again temporarily to get them popping ASAP (see below).

civ4warlords20071006123nk8.jpg

The previous player set up Wealth and Research in a number of cities to speed Liberalism. I changed all but the capital to other builds (courthouse, barracks, etc) but kept us on 100% science. We are losing money like anything, but we have plenty of cash in the bank for the time being, thanks to our trades, so we can afford it. I set research to Chemistry and I'd like to get it pretty quickly.

Other events:
- Wang demanded Education once again. Once again he left empty-handed.
- Buddhism spread to Uzbek, Andahuaylas, Machu Picchu, and Numidian
- Peter completed the Islamic shrine
- Wang / Ragnar declared war on Toku on the last turn!
- Huayna founded a city (Ica) between Verlamion and Numidian. It is unlikely to inconvenience us for the time being, but is annoying nevertheless:

civ4warlords20071006125nl1.jpg

Points for the next player:
- The borders at Numidian will expand to cover the Iron resource in 2 turns, so remember to switch back to ordinary builds (I already have a barracks and courthouse set up), and also remove the artists to allow growth. I've started chainfarming the plains/forest tiles N of the city to improve growth: one worker is on the road 1NW of the city chopping the forest so that the farm there will be built quicker once the other workers have finished their current task. You'll also get extra hammers to use for the courthouse But obviously you'll also want to concentrate on getting the Iron hooked up as well. You can use the Guerilla II Gallic Warrior nearby to escort the workers and protect the mine from the barb city.

civ4warlords20071006130ws9.jpg

- You'll probably want to switch back to Bureaucracy once the borders at Numidian are done.
- We have an axeman making his way back to our territory via unclaimed roads and Huayna's territory:

civ4warlords20071006130ao7.jpg

- We should be okay economically for a while, so I think our priorities should be Research, Military, and spreading Buddhism.
- There don't appear to be any trade opportunities for the moment; Peter is still the only one with Nationalism and he isn't wiling to trade. Shaka / Saladin are also keeping Printing Press to themselves. NB/ They are HC's / Izzy's worst enemies.

Ok, assuming bob is busy and auto-skipped ...

Revolted back to bureaucracy after culture pop ... and connected the iron in 1574AD. I hate working on desert/tundra hill ... take a lot of worker time.

dot-AD1574-iron.jpg

Bad news, HC revolted early in my turnset:

dot-AD1559-HC-free-rel.jpg

We are officially friend-less. To top it off, I shoo-ed Nappy away.

dot-AD1562-nappy.jpg

Go take a nap or whatever, Nappy, and stop bothering me.

A lot of armies are traversing our territory just to clear off the barbs for us ... is that really necessary?

dot-AD1559-barb.jpg

How about give Toku a helping hand instead?

dot-AD1559-toku-barb.jpg

Now, the merchant. Pre-chemistry, it is always the most lucrative to go to the city with Temple of Artemis. In this game, it is Ulundi of Zulu:

dot-AD1562-trademission.jpg

We can now research for 100% for a looong time ... or we could upgrade a lot of CR maces to grenies (chemistry in the next turn) for the war as demanded by our variant.

We lost the sheep ... and to think I actually had a hand in it by spreading Bud to that Inca city :hammer2:

What should we research next? nationalism? i always have doubts about the research path at this stage of the game.

but then again, i guess he "has enough in his hands"

What about the civics? ... should i change to theocracy/vassalege? or theo/burocracy?

note: good to know about the temple of artemis thing and the marchant, i always sent him to the end of the wolrd to get a possible distance bonus or something jeje
