.01 - Guerrillas!

Our units still get a free gorilla from the duns - at least until Rifling ;)

gorilla1dp1.gif

But I guess one is never enough . . .

gorilla1dp1.gif

I would also be inclined to go for CS first.

Hmm, well yes. How could I forget about that! :shake: The dun gives a free Guerrilla I Promotion. :wallbash:

...

So Firaxis made a perfectly useless UU for Celtia, since the dun would have given us a Guerrilla I Swordsman, anyway.

...

;)

Therefore I am against going for CS if we don't manage to get quite some GW out first.

Hi guys, already played my turnset. I will have to make the report later tonight.

I researched CS first, but dont worry dot, gallic warriors need 155 gold to be upgraded, and we dont have that kind of money

ohh... started building the heroic epic in bibracte... hope it wasnt a mistake

Report comming up tonight!

So much for making most use of the UU as mentioned here.

:gripe:

Objective not achieved. Alas, let's see what else happened! ;)

Scowler, good to know that you're back. So you'll just rejoin the roster and pick it up after me?

Nope, I'm too busy hiding in the deepest pit my pet gorilla can dig for me. :D

Turnset report:

The first thing i did was to trade for feudalism with Isabel, wich reduced the research of civil service by 2 turns

As i wasn't planning on using the whip, changed to this civics (we are spiritual)

Civ4ScreenShot0072.jpg

As Isabel was in war with shaka, who has the biggest army in the world, i traded copper to her. U can cancel the deal if u wan't

Civ4ScreenShot0073.jpg

Founded the new city in spot B. It doesnt have budhism yet.
Retreated our troops from the barb city, to defend some incoming barb archers from south, and because that city in a hill wasnt going to be easy to take. In my opinion we dont need more cities for now, the only purpuse i could see in taking those rotten barb cities i to get the pillage gold.

Civ4ScreenShot0074.jpg

Huayna asked for machinery. I gave it to him.
1. when looking for our best option in getting feudalism he refused to acept machinery in exchange, unlike every other civ, so he most likely researched it halfway himself
2. we can use him as a war ally, so keeping good relations may help.

Civ4ScreenShot0075.jpg

In the last turn, CS came in. We can now start training maceman.
NOTE: I started the heroic epic in bibracte, because we really need a good military producing city, and with burocracy we might get maceman in 2-3 turns (it's about to be completed), Please feedback me in this decision (the :) way or the :( way)

Comments on Crotazzo's last set

HE in the Capital? Well, I've never had that and it seems rather disputable, imho. Now the question would be whether it might be worth vetoing it there and cash in the hammers later?

Trading Copper? Well, let's hope she doesn't use our copper on us in a hurry. :scared:

HC: I think it's wise to keep him happy. But since random personalities are on he might happen to have a backstabber mentality!

Nappy: I think that he might be a good target. We'll see.

Team

I won't play this before tomorrow evening, i.e. 24 hrs from now. So I might as well throw in a bunch of thoughts and questions. :mischief:

Variant rules

I'd really like to see us set up and clarify some of the variant rules.

Before setting the Variant Rules I'd like to hear the thoughts of those who might be playing. I've been thinking about the following:
  • Even though all victory conditions are enabled we might want to limit that for us. [1]
  • In order to achieve a victory we must have ...
    • destroyed at least one civ. [2]
    • a least one vassal. [3]
    • founded a religion and have a "spread percentage" of >40%. [4]
  • Make use of the UU and the UB to learn about them. [5]
[1] Do we want to limit ourselves? And if so, how? Pretty much everything is possible.

[2] Just yet to come. ;)

[3] See [2].

[4] I think that's rather hard. So let's keep this in mind when advancing through the game. Do you think it's wise to have a city specialized on missionaries? Or would it be better to just built one every now and then, here and there?

[5] Well this is partly not achieved due to our few GW's. But in this case let's alter it a bit...
The bonus of the dun stops with rifling. So if we have chemistry first we could possibly built some grenies and musketmen who should have the free Guerrilla I from the dun. What do you think about this, Gentlemen?

And finally there is another bit of self-quoting:

To put it more clearly... I'd have three priorities with this game.
  1. I'd like to learn a lot about Brennus' UU and UB.
  2. I'd like to learn even more about economy on a highlands map.
  3. I'd like to achieve 1. and 2. while seeing fun and respect in sharing and discussing.
1. The UU is out. See above. ;)
2. I think we've already learnt that such a crappy start on a highlands map is really tough. What else do you think about this, so far?
3. Well ... now, be careful, dot ... I think that we are actually doing quite fine here. I must admit that I am a bit upset by the neglection of our UU. -- :ar15: :run: -- But then again, this is the first SG I've ever started and what I've learnt so far is that it is absolutely crucial to make a clear statement on the variant rules and the objectives in the very first post. And that's what I've missed out on. :suicide:

It feels as if I'd suck at being a SG starter and "leader". I'd be really thankful for your :gripe: and your :pat: ... Since I'd like to improve! ;) Thanx for your attention, Gentlemen.

About our victory condition, i would like it to be diplomatic. It wont be easy to pull off because our [2]&[3] conditions and the random personalities.

About a missionary producing city, its a good idea, but we might limit the missionary production when we are not planning any wars.

About our unique unit, i think we couldnt use them manly because swordsman are pretty useless in most of the raging barbs games. Besides, being surrounded by crapland, we just didnt have any city worth taking any close.

Highlands gives a pretty hard game, but we had one of the worst statrs possible IMO. In fact there are regions in the map that might have floodplains, +grasslands, +grassland hills, that would make it possible to have better specialized cities, in commerce and in production like any other map type.
We on the other hand had to limit ourselves to a good capital and regular/bad non-capital cities. That is crippling our economy badly.

Hope that after a war we can capture some better cities to help poor Brennus :P

Sorry for the delay gentlemen. I haven't come round to playing this yet.

Thanks for your reply, Crotazzo! :)

It seems to me that interest in this game is vanishing. The question that arises for me is ... What would this game need to regain interest? I really don't like to finish this game just for the sake of finishing it. Any input and thoughts would be very welcome.

I'll play this tomorrow afternoon. Report up in the next 24 hours.

Interest is vanishing? Why did you say that? Everyone is waiting for you to finish your turnset.

On variants and all that: you are the SG leader ... you set the rules. Personally I prefer simple one-line variant-- like eg "Fox06 - Need For Speed: only 2-movement units can leave the city border" ... leave the player a lot of rooms to interpret and improvise.

The problem here is you set out with an ideal scenario to use Gallic Warrior and all that, but circumstances changes ... it is no longer suitable to do that. Just too bad and move on with it. We are still within the variant constraint IMHO to (a) vassalize 1 Civ, (b) eliminate 1 Civ, and (c) spread religion 40%. I don't see any need to add anything more complicated than that.

Well, the "interest is vanishing" statement seemed true to me, to some extent, because I didn't really get replies to my questions.

My role as a SG leader seems to be something I'll have to "grow" into. And I figure that leaving the setting rather open helps to keeps things going. So, thanx for your feedback GreyFox. It's very much appreciated.

About the GW ... Just too bad about it. The turns are played - but before I'll wake up with the outline of my keyboard printed to my forehead ... I'll post the report tomorrow.

;)

I'm lurking and still interested in the resolution of this game :)

:) I'm glad to know that someone is actually lurking. ;) We'll keep it coming!

Sorry Gentlemen. This has been an exhausting day with some family work. After this report is up I'll be totally back and focused.

Well, Gentlemen.

- An Engineer in Bibracte was changed to another scientist to speed up Engineering. Also some tile swapping to improve efficiency.
- Heroic Epic at the capital was vetoed temporarily. Sanitation should take priority for the moment.
- The current civics of Vassalage and Serfdom ain't quite optimal. We are Spiritual so it is easy to switch to Bureaucracy / Slavery.

Just Press Enter

- Gergovia finishes a library. The economy is somewhat lacking, baby, so we continue to add courthouses wherever possible.

- More barb cities are being uncovered. This one is south of Viking territory and has already had a border pop:

civ4screenshot0010gn9.jpg

We also have a stack of units on its way to Numidian, which is guarded by 2 archers. The city is captured with the loss of one cat. It is completely empty so it starts work on a granary.

civ4screenshot0023ne0.jpg

We are not the only ones looking for free cities and experience. Toku captures Parthian

civ4screenshot0011gg5.jpg

and Wang Kon has a stack approaching Kushans, which he takes without difficulty. He also gets 4 free workers from it

civ4screenshot0012azk2.jpg

civ4screenshot0022or6.jpg

Also notice from the above that Roskilde is now Ragnar's capital: he is down to his last city. However, Wang Kon is attacking the barbs rather than Ragnar. Why? Because Ragnar has capitulated to him some time ago. Why wasn't this mentioned in a previous report? Hum. :gripe:

Shaka is still at war with Izzy. He asks us to help out, but the answer is no. He drops to annoyed. And then he captures Toledo (note that Huayna has completed Hagia Sophia)

civ4screenshot0025oz1.jpg

Wang Kon demands that we stop trading with Peter. Again that's a no.

Izzy asks for help vs the Arabs (Shaka's vassal). Once again we're unwilling to commit but she remains pleased. In fact, we then make the following deal with her that helps her militarily vs Shaka and Saladin:

civ4screenshot0031pq1.jpg

This saves the remaining turns on Engineering. Research is set to Paper with the opportunity of going for the University of Sankore, possibly in Talosa?

Other points:
- Heroic Epic has still not been built. Maybe it should go in Verlamion to help the cultural battle against Huayna's borders? And the site might be good for military production?
- Courthouse has been queued at Verlamion to take advantage of a forest chop
- We switched back to Serfdom halfway through the turnset.
- Wang Kon still has stacks moving around, but he doesn't seem ready to declare war just yet. Maybe he is just collecting barb cities? What definitely IS worrying is Shaka's power graph

Space. The final frontier. Maybe. One day.

I've got it. Obviously.

But the game will have to wait until Wednesday evening.

Good evening, or morning as the case may be,

Scowler

p.p. dot

Now, I am utterly confused. I thought dot has already played?

From post #172:

... the turns are played - but before I'll wake up with the outline of my keyboard printed to my forehead ... I'll post the report tomorrow.

Then post #174 see Scowler post the report. I thought dot has some problem so Scowler is posting on dot's behalf, hence the Roster: dot -- Just Played, Scowler -- UP.

Now dot's latest post totally threw me off.

What's really going on here? Is dot and scowler somehow transposed each other's identities?

--

Well, GreyFox.

Scowler has been my scribe for the report of my set. And on Wednesday Scowler will play his set and I'll be his scribe via Skype. Hence the p.p.

I hope this is helping to clarify the "somewhat twisted" situation. ;)

The turns are played. Report will be up tomorrow (max 22 hrs from now) since I'm way too tired.

News: No war trumpets were heard. ;)

Pre Set Thoughts

Since we don't have any iron we don't have pikemen. And Shaka as well as Wang Kon have mounted units. So we either get some iron soon or we need to beeline gunpowder. So I'll stick with Paper anyway.

We're going to have to built up defence. Just in case someone gets reckless. And we need to spawn missionaries, though I won't do this in this turnset. We need to get up defences and our economy more urgently.

Pre Set Actions

Bibracte: Turn on Citizen Automation to grow faster.
Vienne: Turn on Citizen Automation to grow faster.
Gergovia: Citizen from camp to farm for faster growth.
Camulodunum: All fine.
Ditto with Verlamion.
No change in Numidian.

Civics: No change. I can't change them anyways for two turns.

I think that's pretty much it.

Just ... hit ... Enter!

*****

Turn 01

Peter has a stack of War Elephants outside Paris.
Our Axe found a Barb Swordsman.
And various other stacks are moving around in the south.

:scared:

Turn 02

Barb Swordsman is attacking our Axeman and loses.
An unclaimed mine is being pillaged and gives us 9 gold.

Civis: From Serfdom to Caste System.

Hired an artist at Verlamion (2 turns to pop borders) and at Numidian (4 turns).
Camulodunum: Governour switched on. Production emphasized.

Turn 03

Vienne: Courthouse >> Castle. More for commercial reasons than for defensive ones.

Turn 04

Citizens, err, Slaves!

2m.jpg

Borders have popped at Verlamion. Artist removed, sheepish pasture and spicy plantation started.

Bibracte: Market >> Castle.

Peter's stack has now entered our borders. And he'll continue moving south.

Turn 05

:coffee:

Shaka might attack Madrid. Possibly maybe.

Turn 06

On the IBT we've lost our exploring axe and archer. Both to Barbarian Horse Archers (BHA).

Artist at Numidian is fired because the borders popped.

Verlamion has the Spices and Sheep online! :) and :health:

Tolosa: Aqueduct >> Castle.

Turn 07

Shaka is still bombarding Madrid. Ah, and Peter is here:

cheaprice.jpg
.

I thought it worth taking.

Anazasi is captured the Spanish Empire. It's way down south.

Turn 08

Shaka is still bombarding Madrid. Izzy has popped a GProphet and a GGeneral.

A Deamon Horse Archer didn't attack the longbow but an archer and withdrew. Now he really start's annoying me! So I attack him with an archer. And the DHA loses! :D

Bibracte: Castle >> Maceman. Reasoning: Build more Units!
Vienne: Castle >> Market. If anybody disagrees they can change it. ;)

Turn 09

Shaka is STILL bombarding Madrid.

We have a problem in 4 (FOUR) turns. Barbs are threatening our land and improvements even more.

Build More Units !

 (53 times underlined)

Gergovia: Courthouse >> Dun.

Turn 10

Angkor Wat is built somewhere else and Shaka is still bombarding Madrid.

Bibracte is guarded by a single Warrior and approached by a BHA and a barb archer. :scared:
If we had built the HE we could have two macemen until then. :gripe:

The GW is still active.
Spoiler possible directions to go :
East

east.jpg

Or West

orwest.jpg

Afterthoughts

HE has 283 :hammers: in in Bibracte. Can someone verify (or falsify, as the case may be) that those will be cashed in, if we built it elsewhere? For the sake of leaving the second national wonder slot at Bibratce for Wall Street or Oxford University.

Bibracte has commerce emphasized.
The maceman can be hurried to two turns if you emphasize production.
The other cities look fine.

Paper is due next turn. I'd go for Chemistry. Soon!

Other Points of Interest (OPI)

gp.jpg

Next player up: Check the area around Madrid. There's a lot going on up there!

We have two main Issues. Economy and Miltary. The Economy has been improved. Now we have to deal with the Military!

There are workers down on their way to Numidian.

Spoiler EDIT: :
[23:56:28] Scowler says: You might suggest moving the Guerilla II, Combat I Longbow down to Bibracte (or even further) to help with defense.
