I absolutely D  E  S  P  I  S  E dial-up, but I'm stuck with what my parents pay for. For anyone who has <cough, cough> let's say, EXPERIENCED dial-up, tell me how it's awful here.

1. Dial-up kicks you off
2. Dial-up is SLOW

yes it sucks, but I miss the modem sound so badly

No, I'd say to the stoneage. Cable is worth while... I'd never miss my flatrate.

Been on dial-up/cable hybrid weirdness for a while. Boots me every so often, on average once every 4 days - or is that when I shutdown? Sometimes I remain connected for 7 days+ so definately no problems there.

At home, it's broadband upto about 3 metres from me, where it is converted to analogue signal. Not had any real problems. Litterally cannot be bothered with upgrading. I rarely download, and when I do there is never a rush.

Price is flat-rate, it is convenient because I can dial-up from any phone socket, and I like being able to change my IP address when it suits me :mischief:

I don't want to pay any installation costs, or mess with cables, because I don't plan to stay here much longer.

However, if I cared about MP3s or used P2P services, then I would probably upgrade - but I don't.

I've just got broad band. The downside is now I can look at the members thread....I mean upside......no down  Sheesh what was I thinking. The sooner I rip the cable out the better :) .

I liked dial-up just fine. AOL9 is pretty good for dial-up - they've got their top speed technology, whatever that is. It only took around ~3 seconds for a page here to load. In Scotland Dial-up is apparently faster than in say London or the American west coast because their isn't as much pressure on the phone network.

Anyway, I'm off to gaze longingly at CTs picture again in the members thread. Those of you with dial-up, well what can I say you don't know what you are missing ;) .

Dial-up is up to 100 times slower than broadband. :p

Dial-up requires that you keep a landline in your house even though you could take advantage of good cellphone coverage to cut the cord completely.

I have 10 Mbps, I rather not use internet if i must use dial-up.

It depend on your modem, if you have a cheap win modem, then it suck. but if you have a true modem, like a U.S. robotics, then your connection is much more stable and you got lower ping.

i have a us robotics modem since 5 year and i play first person shooter without to much problem, ok sometime my ping go over 300, but usualy i am around 200-250 which is very playable, i even kick lots of 50 pinger.

Win modem are soft ware modem, it have to suck some power from your mopther board, while a tru modem got the harware for the job.

I agree. I hate my dial up. The only benefit is that it is free. I can't afford anything better though.

I am close to convincing my father to switch to DSL. moved all of his favorites to IE(he argued he couldn't acess his favorites without aol, one down. Then he said it was to expensive, I told him it's only $7 more, and the last one is he can't acess his stock info. So now I have to find a program or website that can do someting like this

. Then I have shot down all his arguments. :D)

Good thing I don't have it today. :)

On the bright side, when on the internet on dail-up, you do not get any spam on the phone.* :D

* ...If you are not on the government's "Do Not Call" list, that is.

Marine - MSN has a similar feature in its MSN8, called the Dashboard, that can list financal information.

Dialup sucks because the connection is so easily interrupted. I remember one time, I was downloading a file and then, I got kicked off! And two seconds later, I heard the phone ring, and it was my friend who was talking! I screamed at him that he caused me to lose my dialup connection...
