1.17f Problems/Bug Reports

Has anyone else noticed that v1.17f is slower than 1.16f? Currently I am waiting for the AI to move for 2 HOURS !!!!

Never had turns last THAT long in 1.16f! This is on a huge map, 16 civs, 80% water! In 1.16f I played games on huge map, 16 civs, pangaea, 60% water well into the modern age, and the AI turns never took more than 1 hour! Taking into account that in 1.16f, the AI kept trying to build cities hundreds of times a turn, when the city limit is reached. However in this v1.17v game I'm still in late industrial age and there only about 350 cities in the game and it is SO slow!

Has anyone else experienced such a slow-down?

I hope this is something which is indeed a 'bug' in v1.17 and will be fixed in v1.18! :)

Note: I'm always playing with friend/enemy animations off, and I always have MP3 playing in the background, I have a Celeron 600 laptop with 128 Meg RAM - (don't laugh please!)

Are you sure your not running CIV3 on a WW2 enigma machine?

Seriously, I have not noticed any slow down on my machine.
Have you tried a full de-install and re-install of the game and patch?

It really works wonders, I assume it dumps all the old info that
clogs up the code and give CIV3 a fresh start,
give it a try!

in 1.17 the captured workers now say that they are my civ's nationality in the main page ... but still say they are the other civs nationality if u right click on on the unit

I thought that the fighter "air superiority" bug was supposed to be fixed in the 1.17 patch. It looks like it is only partially fixed. When I set a fighter's mission to air superiority, if a bomber attacks the city that the fighter is in, it activates fine. However, if a bomber attacks the space next to the city, it doesn't do anything. I thought that the fighter was supposed to attach anything that flies within its range.

Does the game show the intercept if it is not succesful. Because if it does not (like coastal fortresses) then that might have happened here.

It happened to me a couple of times that i destroyed a civ but no sign appeared about them being destroyed. Reason: a vessel survived...

No problem: just sink it!
so i did that: ERROR!!!
I had to close down the entire game.

No problem: just leave the vessel!
so i played on, untill another civ got in a war with that vessel...
and destroyed it. WHAM: ERROR!!!
same result.

Stupid, stupid, frustrating bug.

does anyone know a solution?

Try using a game editor to give them a settler on the ground somewhere, maybe smack inside your territory is best. Kill the ship then take the settler.

I have two possible bugs. (Both in the same game!).

The first was when I was fighting the English (they only had 3 cities. :)), and I conquered their capital. I left it undefended by mistake, and when they retook it the next turn, the game froze.

The other was the northern city, which was on the northern most tile (y = 0). I sent a jet (or a bomber) on a bombing run, and usually, it's supposed to go 3 tiles on the diagonal and return, except the 3rd tile was out side of the map. The plane went there, disappeared, and the game froze.

(in both instances, I could still move the mouse, and use Windows and other Windows programs, though). Anyone else come across this problem?

And, in the cilopedia, under conscription (I think), Communism still shows a draft rate of 3.

I don't know if anyone else has encountered/mentioned this, but I don't have time to read all 12 pages right now so here's my bug.

Regent level, version 1.17f
I was in the process of researching space flight, but I instead stole space flight from the Iroquois using my spy. This caused two rather bizarre things to happen, one more disconcerting than the other.

1) My advisor comes up and tells me that we have learned some other tech (not space flight) from the English (who had been destroyed some time ago). The actual tech I learned was in fact space flight, and was aquired from the Iroquois, so my advisor was just on crack. No big deal.

2) This is the weird one. From the same screen with the crack smoking advisor, I selected "What's the big picture?" presumably to pick the next tech that I would research. However, the game acted as if I was stealing another tech from the Iroquois. Now the big problem here was that Hiawatha didn't have any more secrets that I didn't know, so I couldn't pick any technology form any era to take from him, but I couldn't exit the tech tree screen by any method (clicking "x", hitting Esc, clicking other advisor faces all prompted my advisor to say "we must select a secret to steal").
So basically I had to reboot to get out of that screen. Has anyone else encountered this, and is there something else I could have done to get out of that screen?

This happened on Marla's map, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. I was exploring with my warrior (first few turns), and happened upon a hut, when 3 warriors attacked. Well, just prior, I found a settler who wanted to join. They were going to their new city location. Anyway, the barb attacked my undefended city, and when I tried to found a city with the settler, it gave the name, Berlin. (Guess I'll name it Bonn, or better yet, Esslingen (with an l) - where my great grandmother is from. - yes, I know, Bavaria. *blush*)

Another exploit. Build a colony (I'm not sure if it was captured, or depleted) and the road will turn into rails! (even before you can build railroads).

same when you raze a city after - I think - one civ has reached Rail, even if neither the owning nor the razing civ has rail.....

The most likely cause of these severe text errors is running the 1.16 engine after the installation has been upgraded to 1.17. If you noticed this wierd text problem after upgrading or messing with files, that's why.

You can't research tech any faster than per 4 turns, and the slowest being 40. Thus, if you are getting one every 4 turns, you might as well set all your commerce to other things, because it won't do you any good.

I noticed exactly that. But that is not the only problem with science allocation.

In year 1936 AD, I changed my science from 40% to 60%.
In terms of spending, it changed from 986 to a massive 1495, which is about 50% more than what I had!

But even so, any possible discovery still is only available after 4 turns, just as it was before. And I was just starting a new discovery (Fission) in that turn! This is very weird.

But even worst is a bug regarding scientists allocation.
I won’t repeat myself here. So please check out Item 3, of Major Bugs in this thread:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16483

Besides those problems, which I think already existed in earlier versions, I really like this new patch, specially the fact that workers got smarter. Now they are *almost* totally reliable. :)

They clean up pollution better, stacking more than 2 workers in a square. They are able to stack at least 4 workers to clean up pollution, when you choose either Shift+A or Shift+P (just for pollution).

Regarding fonts:
I haven’t had any problem whatsoever. I’m using win2000, with all the patches applied.
I have the option “Smooth edges of screen fonts”, disabled on the Operating system. Perhaps that is creating the problem described earlier in this thread.

I had the same font problem in the past, and font smoothing does not fix it :) Nor does completely uninstalling the game and re-installing it :P I fixed it myself by using the windows ME restore feature and restoring my PC to before the problems occurred :P I later did see a post by a firixian somewhere explaining how to fix it and what causes it though, I forget where and exactly what they said but it boiled down to removing one of the fonts from your system. In my case, it had been changed around by using word :)

In any case, its not a problem with the patch, I had the problem before 1.16 :P

I had this problem, and found out with a little debugging that StarOffice was the culprit. Seems that it installs an older version of the Lucida Sans font that Civ uses, and it's in a non-standard location so just deleting it from your font's directory wont help. I had to completely delete all the fonts, wipe the Registry entries out and then re-install font from a "clean" win2k system.

Point being, my guess is that you have StarOffice, or some other program that has overwritten your font. Something you may have installed after Civ3.

Note that I believe that Civ is using the correct version of the font (v1.2). The old version (v1.0) did not have hinting in it for smaller font sizes, which thus makes it look nasty.

Oops. Sorry about that. Gave you just enough info to do absolutely nothing with ;)

First, try reinstalling the 1.17 patch. It will uninstall itself the first time you try to install it. The second time it will actually reinstall itself.

If that doesn't fix the problem, you will need to get ahold of a version 1.17 executable file and manually replace the one you have. PM or email me with your email address and I'll get one to you.

And if that doesn't work you will have to uninstall the game and reinstall it and then apply the 1.17 patch.

I have discovered a problem in the military advisor screen. Sometimes when I click on the 'view opponent units' button, the mouse stop's working. Not only in the game, but also on the whole system, so I have to reboot the computer, and save the game by hotkey's.
This problem started after I installed the f1.17 patch, and I had no problem with it before.
I'm using Win98/Microsoft Intellimouse

I have the same problem (or at least a similar sounding one) with my MS mouse. It started showing up first with Civ3 but also happens in other apps (even when civ3 isn't running) and on same days can be a real nuisance and others never happen at all. If your mouse is plugged in through the USB port, just unplug the mouse till the curser vanishes then replug it back it, and it should work again.

For me I think either the connection of the cord to the mouse or at the hub plug is getting loose, and so some how that causes it to go out (sometimes it will vanish completly from the desktop and the red light will go out). However, unplugging and replugging it always works. I now have it plugged into a hub that I have on my desk, to make it easier to do this.
