1.29b2 + double your pleasure + resolution hack = no good!

Hi everyone. I just installed 1.29b2 and then double your pleasure. I launched it and the mod loaded fine, but it was all stretched on my 15" 16:10 powerbook. I quit it, and relaunched with the option-key. My resolution wasn't there! Bleh. So I found out about the resolution hack. I dragged the Civ III app to the window, set the resolution to 1280x854 and quit it. Next time I launched Civ III it kept the same crappy resolution from before. Future drags of Civ III to the hack show 1280x854, but that's not what is being used. Could this have to do with the DYP modpack I installed? Is there a workaround?

**** NEVERMIND ****

I got it. I didn't realize I had to select it from the menu while option--launching. Sorry. :-)

What's 'double your pleasure'? I think I've heard of it, but I have yet to manage to figure out Mac mods, so I haven't downloaded any recently.

Double your Pleasure (DyP) is a very extensive mod pack that adds lots of civs, units, techs, and aims to extend the early phases of the game considerably. There's a version of it for vanilla Civ3, and you can install it on a copy of Civ3 version 1.29b2 for Mac.

The main site for downloads is here, and there are related discussion forums here on CFC in the Creation and Customisation area, and at cdg.

I've only played it as far as I needed to ensure that it installed OK using my drag/drop installer, but it seemed a pretty substantial piece of work. The tech tree alone is worth looking at!

Hey, that's nice. Can i play regular Civ 3 games (with 1.29b2) on DyP? If not i'll wait, 'cause i'm in the middle of an interesting game.

I'm not sure, it depends whether it changes any of the standard units. But why worry? Just make a copy of your complete Civilization III folder and call it Civ DyP or something, then apply the DyP mods to that copy. I have several modded versions of Civ3 on my hard drive. I make aliases of the different Civ3 application file copies, renamed to describe the mod, and drag them to the dock so that I can launch the one I want. I frequently have two versions running at once if I'm playing a GOTM and come up in a Succession Game. I've sometimes had three open simultaneously.

question: i downloaded the files. open them with stuffit expander and now there is a map on my desktop named: full DYP 100r.exe or something. not sure what to do with the map . . . . anyone?

I haven't donw it for a while, but I think you just drop it onto Stuffit again. An .exe file is normally only usable on an Intel-compatible machine, as it is a Windows or DOS executable. But this one seems to be a self-expanding archive, and Stuffit can find and expand the files inside it. You should then finish up with a folder containing all the mod files to install in Civ3. If you use my drag and drop mod installer you can do that bit with a single mouse click.

ZipIt will open it fine (OS9 and OSX native)...

To enable you to 'try before you buy' ZipIt, click the 'I have my password' button on the ZipIt splash screen and type in a random assortment of letters in each of the 3 fields, about 30. The 'Not yet' button will then become enabled, meaning you can use it before you get around to paying for it. It's a useful app. to have (only about $20 I think).

I have downloaded and unpacked the Full 'DYP101r' .exe file and am about to give it a whirl on my eMac in a day or so.

Okay guys, what's the trick to getting this to work? I unstuffed the exe and placed all the files in what seemed like the proper places. It loads fine, I get the DYP version in the corner, but at the game start screen the default is to have your opponents all be the same civ. This hints that something is wrong. It will launch, but as soon as you arrive at the opening settler screen there are no units visible and it quits to the desktop.

Any ideas? I'm running the the latest beta. TIA.

Can't say - I'll install it tonight at home and see if I get the same errors and post back here.

Presume you were using version 1.29b2 of Civ3 to install DYP into?

Well, I made another install of Civ3 on my eMac last night, updated it to v1.29b2, then used Alan H's Mod Installer to add DYP101r (the 'Vanilla' version), and hey presto it worked first time :)

I'm very impressed with DYP - it's almost like an new game in itself. Far more of a challenge to get established in the Ancient Era. I'm playing as the Polynesians, and am up to about 50BC, but with only 7 cities, as I got hammered by Barbarian Raiders... but it's great fun. Highly recommended! :D

Yup, got it working as well. The key is the mod installer. Not sure what it does differently but manually moving the files doesn't seem to work. I wonder if there is a way to provide a link to the installer as a sticky in this forum, as it was very confusing trying to find it and sort it out from the GOTM installers.

Funny, I also started with the Polynesians. DYP just absolutely rocks. I've been playing Conquests on the PC side for some time, but I am now going to have a very hard time going back.

well, i try again. but it didn't work the first time. i download the file. unstuff it. drop the files into the civ3 map . . . and it is missing something. forgot what it was.

bi the way: were do i get that drag and drop installer? is it ur sig Alan?

i figured it out. instead of 1 click it were many, many, many clicks. now just pray i put them all in the right place, but when i start the game it says DYP down below.

It's here

Hi all,

am a newbie, have been lurking a while to understand how things work, but now I have a question regarding AlanH's mod installer.

I've tried to follow all instructions about installing a clean version, upgrading to 1.29b2 and then dropping the DyP mod onto the mod installer.

Nothing seems to work...

When I launch the mod installer, I get a message saying sorry, the installer can't find Civilization III 1.29. Dragging the DyP mod to the window doesn't work. Dragging the DyP mod over the mod installer icon doesn't work either.

It's like the file isn't drag&drop aware, which is puzzling, since it's a drag&drop installer...?????

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Make sure your Civ3 install is labelled 'Civilization III' exactly and nothing else. Then rescan from inside the Drag & Drop and it should see this install, and add a Civ3 graphic to the window. Then you can drag and drop the DYP update onto it (think it has to be unzipped/extracted first).

I assume that I rescan by double-clicking on the error message? There does not seem to be a menu option to allow me to scan?

Thanks for helping :goodjob:

Yeah, that should be fine. If not, quit and relaunch the D&Drop and it'll scan then.
