India's economic output exceeded any European country's output (excluding Britains) till 1820. Far from the hell-hole you think it was. You should really read a a book. In fact the disparity between the poorest country (say in sub-sharan Africa) and the richest country in the world (Britain) in 1800 was just 1:4. So pretty much everything was a hell-hole or everything was ok before colonization. The economic disaster that happened after that in Asia and Africa was pretty much because of colonization.

So you can actually say they became hell-holes because of colonization.
