125h down.. difficulty question

Been playing a match on C2C since before september or something occasionally...

Match time is now 125h, I had to slow down my research and donate techs to AIs to keep them balanced.. because they are pretty bad (expect AI conquering another AI). I've been playing on Noble but I want to have more challenge in the game..

I tried using the BUG menu to increase my game difficulty but my cities start dying and shrinking immediately after changing the difficulty.. how could I make the AIs harder and not cripple my cities?

1st off, amazing game progress! Well done!

Handicaps are called handicaps for a reason. Yes, at gamestart they give the AI some benefits to help them out the gate if you are playing on harder settings. But for the most part, they operate by making things harder for you than by somehow making things easier or more intelligent for them. That's just the way it works. Crime, education, disease, and so many more factors are made more pressing an issue for the player while leaving the AI's difficulty unchanged. So really, what you're asking for cannot be done. If you were to play from the beginning on a harder setting it wouldn't feel like you're losing so much because you don't really notice the pressure holding you back so much. It just gets experienced as ' the AI is doing better than it did the last time '. Mostly. On REALLY tough settings it can feel like "how the hell is someone supposed to be able to manage an empire with the people being so hard to keep pleased and in line???" It can really force your hand to play with different priorities, that's for sure.

Thanks, I started with 31 AI players on the prehistoric era, playing on Large map with Snail speed I think. But so I guess I'll go with Noble, keep my research rate down and donate techs to AIs to keep them "balanced". Though, is there something I can change in the mod files that AIs would make more units?

PS. No MAFs so far, had a couple of crashes 4-10 in a row when in late game delcared a war on AI, but nothing gamebreaking. Memory usage hasn't gone over 3GB yet either

There are numerous ways but nothing direct.

If you are finding the game too easy, stop playing on Noble and start ranking it up! My wife and I are playing an Immortal game and loving it. If you start the game with a particular difficulty level, you'll fall behind right away but after a while you can start to catch up and it will never feel like you're being held back even if you are being given more challenges in build costs, happiness, health, properties, etc... It'll just feel like that's part of the game and the AI are really good.

Yea well, when I finish this one. If I have time I will start a new game on same settings on Deity. Though I have tumor but dont know yet if it's good or bad sort.. but C2C has been the best mod I've played so far on Civ4 and I'll continue to play it and finish it if I can

I have the tumor in my neck, it's supposed to be cut off by surgery but there's a risk I'll get paralyzed because it's attached to my spinal cord. This game and mod is one thing that keeps me away from those thoughts though. Great job mod team!

Um... wow. I'm kinda blown away by this comment. Thanks and I'm super happy we can be such a support for you. I'd like to offer that a bit more directly though... I truly hope and pray for the best for you and your recovery.

My Mom recently proved that cancer can be beaten, or at least put into remission. Her husband has fought off Leukemia twice. It can be done, especially these days. And I'd try to have some trust and faith in your care providers. They have to tell you about risks like these but they're usually pretty good at handling stuff like that without causing the worst case scenarios. It would certainly be a lot to be looking down the barrel of and I can empathize with the weight that would put on you though. Keep us updated! We'll be looking forward to hearing that it all goes well! (And I'm confident it will!)

Thanks for the support. I always like to think positive. I've survived 3 different operations during my life but tumor scares me a bit

If I finish this Civ4 match, I will post video of the victory screen where you see the map how differents countries gain land/etc. however it's called. But currently I'm atm on pause from Civ4, will continue the match again next year

I wish C2C was a game that was finished enough to expect that most games could be completed playing all the way through the eras. Unfortunately, with overflows and off game balance and underdevelopment in the latest eras, it's pretty rare to ever see a victory screen unless it is a conquest victory. But that doesn't invalidate the play experiences up to that point, just kinda goes to show that the future still hasn't been written. For any of us C2C will always give you another chance and another new start. I'm sure you'll have one of your own once all is said and done there.

The only victory type I've ever got was a Religious Victory - I think it was in Early Ancient.

I had a mercy rule victory before. i was playing on Emperor difficulty and it was for my youtube. After that I ramped the difficulty right up to Diety, hardcore and as of V37 it is actually pretty challenging

If I don't post here or on this forum after that, I will be paralyzed. I set up a "failsafe" that my bestfriend will post my savegame here (my toptier PC will go my friend if something bad happens and he will finish the match). If someone wants to check it out if I get paralyzed and I cannot do anything.. Though I hope I can reach galactic era on my own.

EDIT: You guys just keep up the good work on the mod nonetheless

PS. I've been having constant headaches because the tumor is keeping pressure on my nerves. Had to edit this reply multiple times because my thoughts just do not keep up sometimes

No matter what happens, understand that all things happen for a reason and there IS an author behind the curtain waiting for the chance to reveal those reasons - and they are always more to your benefit in the BIG picture than you can ever imagine as you experience your life in the moment. Trust that's true, regardless of the outcome. A game left unfinished is a story left unfinished and in all truth, there is no beginning and no end, just places where new beginnings happen.

An update incase you guys are interested, my surgery is postponed to until.. don't know what day but doctor said today they need to do more examinations on my tumor. And I will continue my C2C match in few days, hoping to conquer upper left island next!

Posting on my friend's account. I'm his friend and currently on his PC as he said I need to take some files from his PC and release them if something bad happened.

My friend has fallen into a coma, he did not have surgery yet but the tumor somehow disabled his spine and he is in some sort of coma now. What he asked me to do was to post his save game.

Can't beat what others have said but I can say that its usually the ones who aren't experiencing that sort of thing that suffer more than the patient, much like mortality. I agree with Joe that there's usually a divine point to these things. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we wish everyone involved the best possible transition, experience, healing and recovery.
