This idea of mine comes in response to a series of events I've seen unfold in OT today. One poster, who's signature contains a quote by another poster, was challenged to show where the first poster said that quote. The second poster has a quote from the first poster, saying that they don't care about whether the person actually said the quote in their signature or not.

So, this got me thinking, in order to prevent such things from happenning, and to prevent the abuse of such things as signature quotes, and their poltential banning (because they can be very fun, when people aren't being assenine about it), why not have a link at the end of the quote, say, the last word of the quote, to the specific post where the person being quoted said that quote? It's basically just a citation, to prevent people form lying about someone saying something they didn't.

So what do you think, mods, is this a good idea? I'm hoping you don't just come along and say "no, and sig quotes are now banned."

I think the first forum rule pretty much covers it.

"any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate...."

Well I would think (and hope) that requiring such a citation would play wonderfully into this rule; in a way, we'd be upholding it ourselves, and it would prevent people from violating this rule when they do quote someone in their signature. It also eliminates senseless bickering about "I didn't say that" "oh yes you did" etc. etc.

If there's such a huge debate, why not just use the forum search, it takes like 2 seconds.

For the record, you can lie about me in your sig. I'm happy with the additional publicity, positive or negative.

indeed 'perfection is a a$s' naturally gets people wondering ooooo i wonder who this perfection is!

I turned off signatures, so if anyone sees my words being used against me in a sig, please tell me. :scared:

You're safe :).

VB 3.6 automatically includes a link to the post being quoted.

Yet another reason we should upgrade... :)

Ooh, I didn't know about that. But that only specifies when Thanksgiving itself is. I don't know what Thanksgiving week is - does it follow Thanksgiving, like the twelve days of Christmas, or is it the calendar week in which the day falls?

Thangsgiving Week is usually the term to describe Thanksgiving Thursday, plus the Wednesday before and the Friday after and the weekend.

I really think spoiler tags should be allowed.
